internet leak
12/22/2004 01:26 AM
Three individuals are being sued by Apple for illegally distributing test copies of the Tiger OS on a file-sharing website, Reuters is reporting today. Apple claims in its suit that two different versions of Mac OS X, code-named Tiger, were made available on the Web on or about Oct. 30 and Dec. 8 of this year. The company has said it will ship Mac OS X “Tiger” in the first half of 2005, after previewing it to the Mac community at a trade show last June. Apple said in its lawsuit that the two different versions of Tiger were made publicly available by the men, who were members of the Apple Developer Connection. “Members of Apple Developer Connection receive advance copies of Apple software under strict confidentiality agreements, which we take very seriously to protect our intellectual property,” the company said in a statement. According to the suit, the men released the software on a Web site that employs BitTorrent file-sharing technology, which is used to rapidly distribute large files of electronic data, and is also widely used to distribute pirated copies of motion pictures via the Internet. Yesterday, Apple filed a lawsuit against unnamed individuals who leaked details about new products by posting information on the Internet.

Apple Settles with One Tiger Leaker

Apple Settles with One Tiger Leaker 03/28/2005 11:20 PM
Adam C. Engst (~120 words)

Apple Settles with One Tiger Leaker -- Apple Computer has settled out of court with Doug Steigerwald, a recent graduate of North Carolina State University and an Apple Developer Connection member who admitted to sharing seeds of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on the Internet. Steigerwald will pay Apple an unspecified amount, but News.com quoted Apple as saying, "It is not our desire to send students to jail." Legal action remains pending against two other men in the case, which was filed in December and is separate from other lawsuits Apple has filed against Macintosh rumor sites. Steigerwald also still faces a criminal investigation. [ACE]
