Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?
Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?
05/03/2004 05:18 AMCable providers in the US took an early lead in the broadband market,
though they've lost a little ground lately due to cut rate prices for
DSL from the telcos. However, the cable providers are looking to pull
an ace out of their sleeve by promoting their ability to easily
provide the coveted "triple play" of voice, video and data through one
single company. Many cable providers have been able to do this for a
while, but they haven't spent much time promoting their phone service.
That's about to change. While the telcos are still struggling to
figure out their video strategy (TV over DSL? partner with a
satellite provider?), the cable companies are getting ready to
heavily promote
their VoIP phone plans in conjunction with their TV and broadband
connections. They admit that most people still don't know the cable
company offers phone service, but they aim to change that soon.
Beyond just getting more money out of each subscriber, it also means
much less churn for the cable companies, as studies have shown that
the likelihood of a customer switching providers drops drastically for
each additional service they receive from their provider. While the
article doesn't mention much about pricing, it would make sense for
the cable companies to cut the prices on the phone service
drastically. The additional cost to the companies isn't that high,
and undercutting the telcos in their core market has to hurt them.
Besides, as the article points out, choosing a phone company is much
more of an "emotional" decision than choosing a broadband provider.
If the cable companies can win over the emotions of people with very
low priced calling plans, they'll more than make up the difference in
new customers for their broadband and video services - and the
resulting lack of churn.

There have been some sever
e allegations about foul play inside of ICANN with regards to the
.travel sTLD allocation. Staff, counsel and the board have reviewed
these allegations and I am convinced that these allegations are
unfounded and have just voted in favor of .travel.
I have talked to several independent participants who are also
puzzled by these allegations but I have asked them to dig around for
more facts. I will report back if I find anything, but until there is
some third party corroboration of these allegation, I would hope
people would stop spreading this rumor as if it were fact. I
understand that people don't like to give ICANN the benefit of the
doubt, but these are quite severe allegations from a single source. Please be responsible.

Whatever.
What about putting a line in your will and

pledge that they will come back in time to meet you should they gain
access to time travel in their lifetimes, and they in turn must too
must force their children to make the same pledge and so on all the
way down your entire line of descendants. Surely by making that pledge
today you
should be able to make time travel happen. If it is
at all possible.

Issue
LA Sues Hotel Booking Websites Over Tax
Issue
01/04/2005 06:57 AMWhen travel sites offer rooms to end users, they've often
prenegotiated a lower rate from the hotels in question. When they do
so, they pay tax based on the rate at which they paid for the room --
which seems reasonable. However, when they turn around and sell the
room to someone on their site, they
charge tax based on the
higher selling price. So, where does that extra tax revenue go?
Right into the pockets of the online travel sites -- and not into the
government coffers who set up the tax in the first place. It appears
that someone in LA finally realized this, and decided they
want that extra tax money and
have sued all the big name hotel booking sites over the issue.

Hotel Room Gadgets Confuse The Best Of
Us
Hotel Room Gadgets Confuse The Best Of
Us
11/18/2003 04:46 AMWhile hotels are constantly looking to
add
funky new technologies to their rooms, it appears that they're
facing some backlash from travelers who are pissed off that
the technology is
impossible to use. If you're using a TV, you basically want to be
able to turn it on, change the channels and change the volume via a
remote control. You don't want 50 different buttons with tiny,
incomprehensible text. Add to that the "special" video check outs and
pay-per-view system and people find themselves accidentally ordering
movies and checking out in the middle of their stay. Meanwhile,
others are having problems understanding hotel alarm clocks, minibars
and safes. For a while, hotels were promoting "smart rooms" that
would turn on the light and the radio as you opened the door.
Unfortunately, when most people enter a room and the lights and radio
come on, they get scared because they think someone else is in there.
All of these ideas probably sounded nice on paper, but no one seems to
think through the real world use case. Gadgets in hotel rooms need to
be
very simple and straightforward, since people are only going
to use them a few times. They don't want a learning curve - they just
want things to be intuitive.

Spamming Travel Firm Sues Anti-Spammer
Spamming Travel Firm Sues Anti-Spammer
03/17/2005 03:26 AMHere's yet another case of a company accused of spamming getting
pretty upset when they're called on it. Someone asked a travel
company, named cruise.com, to stop sending him spam. They continued
to send him spam. He threatened to sue them under Oklahoma spam laws,
and featured them on his website. They turned around and
sued him for $4 million for defamation and trademark
infringement. They might have trouble on both those claims. First,
the guy seems to have the spams pretty well documented, including his
repeated attempts to opt-out. It's tough to win a defamation claim
when the facts alleged are true. Second, the trademark infringement
concerns the use of their logo on his website about them -- but, as
has been explained numerous times, trademark law is only to protect
against confusion, not to give full rights to the trademark. It's
quite unlikely that anyone going to this guy's website about how the
company was spamming him would confuse the site as one officially
sanctioned by the spamming company.

03/30/2005 08:33 PMWhile certainly there was
some head scratching over why
Barry
Diller's IAC bought AskJeeves, statements out of the company today
are even more strange. The company has admitted that
going forward they're

particularly selective at all in buying Ask Jeeves? Apparently so:
"We would look at other things but the bar would be higher." Makes
you wonder if they're having a bit of buyer's remorse. While they go
on to say that Ask Jeeves will be an important part of their strategy
going forward, it still seems like an odd, and somewhat disparaging,
thing to say about their newly acquired search engine property.
