The ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are increasingly confident to travel internationally. The jury is still out on whether wireless phones can cause brain damage or cancer, but there are an increasing number of studies coming out that suggest it might not be smart to yack all day on your wireless phone.
Dr. Lief Salford, of Lund University in Sweden, who has called the evolution of wireless phones 'the largest biological experiment in the history of the world,' reported in June that cell phone radiation damaged neurons in the brains of young rats.

The study showed cells in the parts of rats' brains that control sensation, memory and movement died after being exposed to various cell phones at different levels of radiation for two hours.

'The situation of the growing brain might deserve special concern, since biological and maturational processes are particularly vulnerable,' Salford said.

He cautioned that it is possible that after decades of daily use a whole generation of users may suffer negative effects as early as middle age. The paper was published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a U.S. National Institutes of Health journal.

Kim Komando did a nice article on buying camera phones recently. She discusses the importance of checking out the quality of the phone by reading reviews and being selective when choosing a wireless carrier. She then goes on to advise that you “try it before you buy it”. Snap some photos to see how the images turn out. Her message is clear as she explains that you need to know what to expect from your carrier and what features you are wanting from your phone.

Mobile Digital Media announced on Tuesday the release of Directions on the Go, an application that gives owners of Symbian OS Series 60 cell phones door-to-door directions for any metropolitan area. You plug the included card reader into a Mac, download the desired metropolitan area onto an MMC card and slide the card into a compatible cell phone to obtain routes. You can search for locations by address, street name, nearby point-of-interest or fuzzy logic or by simply tapping on the map. You can also pan and scroll across the map and zoom between different levels of detail, with thousands of points-of-interest -- including gas stations, landmarks and banks -- already built in.

One of the intriguing possibilities for NeuroSky's technology is a sleep detector. If you were driving a car and started to fall asleep, the system could sound an alarm and wake you up. NeuroSky is working with partners, most notably China's Ziyitong Technology to develop a sleep-detector as well as systems for gaming and Attention Deficit Disorder.
