04/20/2004 12:45 PMI get asked this question at least once a week: "How do I get my open
source project onto your radar screen?" The question is often
accompanied by a lament about how such-and-such project gets endless
press while the questioner's equally valuable one gets ignored. Public
relations is where volunteer-run open source projects usually fall
down hardest, even worse than documentation, so here's a little primer
on how to get the media to write nice things about what you're doing.
There will be an IRC discussion about promoting your open source

09/01/2004 05:42 AMPersonalization Can Improve Access, Boost

plus.com/jp/Personalization of Web sites -- from the
option to turn off animated introductory pages, to "Welcome, Dr.
Smith!" greetings, to automatically suggesting research sources based
on users' past activities -- can broaden accessibility to users of all
abilities and technologies, according to a report commissioned by the
U.K.'s Joint Information Systems Committee. Although personalization
is no substitute for meeting users' needs through user-requirements
analysis and user-centered design, it can reveal inadequacies in
business processes and allow you to more precisely target services and
learning materials. Among the report's findings is the observation
that narrow applications of personalization are far more likely to
succeed, particularly when a clear objective has been identified, a
business case can be made and control has been or will be established
over the relevant, accurate data. In addition, the report says that
personalization of institutional information services can offer
significant efficiency gains -- for staff, if they can quickly access
institutional information pertinent to their roles, and for students,
if they can access information for which they would otherwise have to
ask in person or in writing.

Joined Open Source Initiative board
Joined Open Source Initiative board
04/01/2005 05:35 PM
I've just joined the Open Source Initiative (OSI) board.
Open Source
Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to managing and
promoting the Open Source
Definition for the good of the community, specifically through the
OSI Certified Open Source Software certifica
tion mark and program. You can read about successful software
products that have these properties, and about our certification
mark and program, which allow you to be confident that software really
is "Open Source." We also make copies of approved open
source licenses here.
The basic idea behind open source is very simple: When programmers
can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of
software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it,
people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used
to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems
astonishing.
We in the open source community have learned that this rapid
evolutionary process produces better software than the traditional
closed model, in which only a very few programmers can see the source
and everybody else must blindly use an opaque block of bits.
Open Source Initiative exists to make this case to the commercial
world.
Open source software is an idea whose time has finally come. For
twenty years it has been building momentum in the technical cultures
that built the Internet and the World Wide Web. Now it's breaking out
into the commercial world, and that's changing all the rules. Are you
ready?
It's an important time for Open Source with many
governments and large organizations switching or seriously considering
switching to Open Source. The people at OSI are dedicated to making
Open Source successful more broadly and I'm honored and excited to be
working with them for this important cause.

Kicking it up a notch: Microsoft's open

04/07/2005 05:06 AMVANCOUVER, B.C. -- Barnaby Jeans, an IT Pro Advisor at Microsoft
Canada, has a new approach to Microsoft advocacy. In the past,
Microsoft executives have been reported as describing GNU/Linux as a
cancer or communism. Other reports include warnings that corporate
users risk being sued, and that the "Pac-Man-like nature" of its
licenses may make interoperability between applications harder. The
Get the Facts Web site continues these direct attacks, although with
greater detail. However, Jeans has a subtler message for corporate
customers. In fact, his message is less in what he says than how he
says it.

My
March
21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition
because, on the same day, a new events database called
EVDB was announced and shown at PC
Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so

others:
Dan

Ross

Om Malik,

The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style,

promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public.
