08/31/2004 03:07 PMI've been in the market for a cheap projector for a
while - an ex-roommate had an Infocus X1, and for the price I haven't
found a better one - but seeing new projectors hitting the market like
these new Epson PowerLites (740c and 745c, pictured) almost make me
want to wait and save up the only $3,000 they cost to bring them home.
It might be a lot of money compared to an X1, let's say, but when you
get built-in 802.11g Wi-Fi, USB flash drive support, on-board MPEG2
decoding, and XGA resolution. Of course, they aren't designed for home
entertainment, necessarily, but being able to free the projector from
my PC would be pretty great.
If, of course, I didn't live in an apartment so small I can connect
everything with six-foot cables.

Mizuka just asked me if I had heard about some guy who was busted
for making tons of money trading stocks who claims to be a
time-traveler. The story was that he would show them the time-machine
if they let him go. She said her Japanese friends were talking about
it. I laughed and checked Google News with an assortment of keywords
with no results. I wandered over to #joiito
. Soon enough nichlas came up with a link to
a WWN article from March, 2003 about the story. Just as I was
wondering if this was something to blog about, KevinMarks page-slapped
us with the snopes.com entry
from April 2003 debunking the story.
I would really love to see the path that this silly story took over
the last 1 1/2 years to get from WWN to me via the Japanese girls
gossip network.

astronaut, Pedro Duque writes "I am writing these notes in
the Soyuz with a cheap ballpoint pen. Why is that important? As it
happens, I've been working in space programmes for seventeen years,
eleven of these as an astronaut, and I've always believed, because
that is what I've always been told, that normal ballpoint pens don't
work in space... and here I am, it doesn't stop working and it doesn't
'spit' or anything. Sometimes being too cautious keeps you from
trying, and therefore things are built more complex than
necessary." From
Snopes:
Fisher spent over one million dollars in trying to perfect the ball
point pen before he made his first successful
pressurized
pens in 1965, which NASA uses.

Cingular Launches Raleigh-Durham Service
Cingular Launches Raleigh-Durham Service
01/03/2005 12:08 PM The first Wi-Fi launch for Cingular is at the Raleigh-Durham (North
Carolina) International Airport: This installation began as an
AT&T Wireless rollout, and is now folded under the Cingular brand
post-merger. Because Cingular is majority owned by SBC Communications,
I expect to see both a quick incorporation of the AT&T Wireless
locations under FreedomLink, SBC's Wi-Fi network, and a drop in
prices. Sure enough, Cingular has already lowered the egregious $70
per month fee for unlimited access to AT&T Wireless's tiny Wi-Fi
network (mostly built with roaming partners) to $50 per month. Still
outlandish, but less so--$50 per month is so 2002....
