R.I.P. SuprNova Greetings
everybody,
As you have probably noticed, we have often had downtimes. This was
because it was so hard to keep this site up! But now we are sorry to
inform you all, that SuprNova is closing down for good in the way that
we all know it.
Apparently something went down last night that prompted this exit from
the scene, a great loss indeed as suprnova was the
gold standard for bittorrent sites. From the inside I
have also learned work on
exeem is being
halted (any beta testers can verify?) trying to head off problems
previously
seen
here.

SuprNova Shuts Down
SuprNova Shuts Down
12/22/2004 01:03 AMA few weeks ago I got hooked on the ABC series
"Lost". Of course that happened after the season was well under
way, which has led to a secondary addiction to BitTorrent sharing so that I could
catch the episodes I'd missed.
Yesterday, SuprNova shut
things down — seemingly for good — which shut down access
to the site where I had been getting the torrent links for the "Lost"
episodes I had missed. That put me into severe withdrawl because there
are several episodes I haven't seen.
Last week The Register
published an excellent analysis of how widespread this bittorrent
addiction is; torrents account for a full 35% of Internet traffic. But
as we all know, success like that can quickly turn sour, as sites like
SuprNova face mounting legal pressure to put a stop to illegal file
sharing. We've talked about the propriety of BitTorrent and TV shows a
co
uple of times already, and to me it seems to me that pulling down a
torrent file of a show that I could've taped should be ok. But from
some of the other torrent listings I've seen while looking for the
"Lost" episodes there are lots of people on the Naughty List for
sharing a lot of content that hadn't ought to be shared.
I have found other feed listings for "Lost", so I think there is
hope for now. But if torrenting gets shut down for good, what's a poor
junkie like me to do?

Suprnova.org is back... with a
vengeance?! It was just last week when suprnova.org, the most
popular site online for finding BitTorrent downloads,
shut down their site. The MPAA and RIAA crowed,
but it appears the celebration was a tad premature.
Suprnova's new site mentions
a special
announcement tomorrow at 9 PM GMT on
NovaStream.org radio.
Rumors suggest that it will introduce
Exeem,
a decentralized, BitTorrent-driven software client that turns every
user into a tracker, removing the requirement for a centralized site
such as suprnova, while providing users with easy searchability, the
swarming powers of
BitTorrent, and a network that is far harder to shut down.
Suprnova & LokiTorrent : Updates
Suprnova & LokiTorrent : Updates
12/30/2004 05:03 PMThis evening,
Suprnova administrator Sloncek made an
announcement that the Suprnova team and an un-known partner have
created a p2p based bit-torrent distribution system called
eXeem. Sloncek said that the company backing the project would
remain anonymous for the present time. The announcement was made on
Novastream, a
radio station loosely affiliated to Suprnova.
He described eXeem as a file sharing program – “Kazaa and bit-torrent
altogether”. eXeem uses a modified version of the bit-torrent
protocol. The program is still in beta testing, and will be available
for public beta in the coming weeks. The program will be separate from
Suprnova on
eXeem.com (not currently online). Sloncek conceded
that eXeem, although offered for free, will come with some adverts to
help pay development costs.
eXeem will allow users to rate and add comments to files. This system
is an attempt to pre-empt the system being flooded with poor
quality/fake files, something that plagues tradition p2p networks like
Kazaa. He said that users would be able to tell if files were of poor
quality or fakes, and consequentially be able to weed out poor
torrents from the system. He announced there were no current plans for
the suprnova.org website. Interestingly, the administrator failed to
comment on the use of the network for pirated and illegal software,
and made no comment as to how, if at all, the system would prevent
users from sharing pirated software and media. The interview is
available for download via bit torrent
here.
In other news, bit-torrent hub
LokiTorrent has announced that
it will not bow to MPAA / Legal pressure to close. The MPAA launched a
series of legal actions against 'Jon Doe' defendants running
bit-torrent hubs before Christmas. The theory goes that in shutting
down the centres of piracy (the hubs) it cuts out the ability for
users to easily access pirated material. Although clear statistics are
not known, the furore and size of donations made to LokiTorrent would
suggest that removing the hubs has done serious damage to piracy.
LokiTorrent has launched a p2p-defence fund to help in a future case
against MPAA lawyers; they've currently raised an incredible ~$17,000
out of a targeted $30,000. For more information on their activities,
click 'read more' for a short interview with one of the LokiTorrent
administrators. We asked him about his plans, why he was doing what he
was doing, and what he thought about piracy.
Somewhat ironically, the success of either of the sites will signal
the failure of the other due to the structural differences between the
two. If LokiTorrent eventually loses or bows to legal pressure, it
will signal the end of website based, bit-torrent hosting hubs. It
will also signify perhaps the first success true the MPAA has had in
years against a specific type of online piracy. However, it might be
more of a pyrrhic victory for the media industry; the shift to a
de-centralised system for torrent files could prove impossible for the
MPAA to successfully shut-down.

01/07/2003 09:53 PMThere. I said it. Slashdot is worthless. OK, I'll admit that the
headlines are useful, but the comments certainly are not. The sad
thing about Slashdot is that there are still people posting useful and
interesting comments, and they're utterly and completely lost among
the utter crap that floods the site. Generally I make do by simply
ignoring the comments section on Slashdot entirely, but after reading
the comments on the Jhai PC yesterday, I realized that the comments
section is not just worthless but actually a malign force. --

Few definitive numbers exist regarding the precise
magnitude of the Slashdot effect, but estimates put the peak of the
mass influx of page requests at anywhere from several hundred to
several thousand hits per minute. The flood usually peaks when the
article is at the top of Slashdot's front page and gradually subsides
as the story is superseded by newer items. Traffic usually remains at
elevated levels until the article is pushed off the front page, which
can take from 12 to 18 hours after its initial posting.

Durring the beginning of the Iraq war, I used P2P to get video and
pictures that were censored from the US. The instant I hear about
pictures, recordings, etc. on another network they can't show in the
US, I go find them on P2P. Along with that search, I also found
pictures that solders had taken along the way. Then I found gunship
video (de-classified and classified because it had altitude/other
readings) showing people walking into a building. The order came, and
they leveled the building. Then started firing on anyone leaving the
scene. You could actually see the men get thrown around after getting

RSS abuse and Slashdot IP banning
RSS abuse and Slashdot IP banning
05/12/2004 03:50 PMI've had a number of people ask me about t
his blog entry, whose title suggests that FeedDemon was banned
from Slashdot. If you read the entire entry you'll find out that the
subject is misleading - it's really about how Slashdot tries to
protect itself from people who make too many requests on their
feed.
Given the un
necessary bandwidth consumption caused by some RSS readers,
Slashdot certainly has every right to try to protect themselves from
RSS abuse. The problem is that they ban based on IP address - which
obviously causes problems for those behind a proxy server that shares
a single IP address with dozens of other users. In all fairness,
though, I'm not sure of a better solution to Slashdot's valid
concerns.
Anyway...since some who read the aforementioned article thought it
might be due to a problem in FeedDemon, I just wanted to make it clear
that this will happen regardless of which RSS reader you use if you're
behind an IP-sharing proxy. As I pointed out in an
earlier post, FeedDemon employs a number of techniques to keep
bandwidth consumption to a minimum - which not only keeps it
'Net-friendly, but also makes it extremely fast since it doesn't waste
time performing unnecessary updates.

After a few days of having a teaser on their site, Suprnova's Sloncek

called eXeem that will be released for download in a couple of weeks.
It's being developed by a new, unnamed company, which asked Sloncek to
be a representative for them.
It will be Windows only, with no Mac or Linux versions planned at this
time. It will be ad supported, and not just banner ads either. It will
be full of adware, most of which you can opt out of, according to
Sloncek. Some of the less intrusive ones will be required for the
application to function though.
Apparently eXeem is based off of BitTorrent, but is different enough
that it can't be called a BitTorrent client, and I assume it won't be

Ray Bradbury is angry.
Mr. Bradbury is accusing
Michael
Moore of lifting the title from his classic science-fiction novel
"Fahrenheit 451" without permission and wants the new

Bradbury says he called
