Sad Christmas Tree

Sad Christmas Tree 03/06/2004 02:04 AM
A Christmas season, many years from now, one of my future children will ask wistfully why we, as Christmas-celebrating Catholics, don't partake in the ritual of the Christmas tree. I just know I'm going to have to recount the story...

You could even wrap up little flash drives as presents and give them away to your office mates, or maybe put a USB-powered vibrator under there and spend New Year's filling out unemployment insurance forms.

So year after year she strung lights and ornaments on the indoor plant, hanging toy drums and colored orbs from its stiff branches.

HONOLULU, HAWAII -- The first-ever Trans-Pacific Open Source Software Conference (TPOSSCON) was held at the Hawaii Convention Center January 17 - 21, 2005. In many ways, it was a "pilot project" meant to gain credibility for what organizer Scott Belford of the Hawaii Open Source Education Foundation (HOSEF) hopes will become a yearly event that attracts people not only from Pacific Islands but also from "mainland" countries on both sides of the world's largest ocean.

Gigantic WWII Japanese plague-rat sub
discovered near Hawaii
03/25/2005 06:37 PM
Cory Doctorow: Hawaiian divers have discovered a gigantic, intact Japanese WWII sub, that was orginally intended to carry plague rats to America.
The submarine is from the I-400 Sensuikan Toku class of subs, the largest built before the nuclear-ballistic-missile submarines of the 1960s.

They were 400 feet long and nearly 40 feet high and could carry a crew of 144. The submarines were designed to carry three "fold-up" bombers that could quickly be assembled...

An I-400 and I-401 were captured at sea a week after the Japanese surrendered in 1945. Their mission, which was never completed, reportedly was to use the aircraft to drop rats and insects infected with bubonic plague, cholera, typhus and other diseases on U.S. cities.
