Gadget lust

Gadget lust 12/19/2004 03:54 PM

Yeah, I know I have a reputation as a gadget geekette (gadgette?), but one of the problems of that is that my travel bag seems to be continually overflowing with the new and cool stuff that I just have to...

Lust for Hats

Lust for Hats 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

Cutest Easter hat ever

My eyewear fetish is something I've always thought of as a compensatory tactic for my inability to have the more traditional shoe fetish due to my titanic 10-10 1/2[US] feet which could never look dainty no matter how stylish the footwear. My secret fetish is hats. I adore hats, but aside from the more practical winter coverings for my cranium I usually look, but don't buy. I always envied the Queen Mum for her abiility to wear the ugliest of hats without the slightest sign of self-consciousness. All those awful hats with matching ensembles paired with the royal smile and wave saying, "Fuck all the little people, I love my hat! I am a sexy beast!" I would have paid good money to see her wear a fuzzy, fringed pimpdaddy hat with gold capped teeth. I wonder what family did with all those hats she left behind and didn't get buried wearing.

This Easter peep hat [Hope Hat, Uudenmankatu] caught my eye and I had to stare at it for a brief while with lust. My usual internal dialogue is, "Would I wear that hat? Yes. Would I wear that hat outside the house? Hmmm....no." It's always the same unless the hat is black and doesn't attract attention. I used to wear a black bowler, but I got way too many smartass jerks asking me if it was Clockwork Orange day. Clearly they were uncivilised cretins who hadn't ever seen Emma Peel in The Avengers. But hats like this make me wish I had what the Queen Mum had in the hat hutzpah department. Of course, with a 7 3/4 hat size, the cute Easter peep hat wouldn't likely fit me any more than a cute pair of fashionable shoes would fit my Cunard sized feet, but we always desire most that which we cannot have or look good in...don't we?

And, for anyone who has ever enjoyed the marshmallowy goodness that are marshmallow peeps, it's Peeps Week time again with Dr. Fun. :)

Lust And Love

Lust And Love 12/21/2003 12:16 AM
Why Are Love And Lust Always Talked About As Opposites? Even a much-respected philosopher like Simon Blackburn makes this essentially epistemological mistake. The horrific modern expression "in lust" is a further example. How can you lust after someone without loving them a little (or a lot) too? Or vice-(and the word vice is well applied)-versa? [More inside.]

I lust for a Roomba 02/10/2004 01:28 PM
I'm just listening to Helen Greiner's presentation of Roomba. She actually has one that she is running on the table, and the #etech -channel is filled with geeks declaring their instant love at the tiny little home robot.

Can't say I'm much different.

I seriously, seriously want one. Like now.

Update: Joi snapped a photo of me, relaxing outside :-)

Update2: I'm now a bit less enthusiastic. IRobot does in addition build the PackBot, which is a military bot. We were shown a cool video in which the PackBot? is thrown in through a window to a building, drives off the roof, and drives directly into a river; surviving all this stuff. It was apparently used during the Afghan war as well. It's just a matter of time before they strap it with guns.

I didn't cherry-pick those three topics from Xeni Jardin's BoingBoing contributions to achieve some eclectic frisson -- those posts just happen to be her last three. They may be indicative, though, of Jardin's many tentacled exploration into dozens of subjects, not just as one of the four cornerstones of BoingBoing, but as a contributing writer for WIRED Magazine and on-air commentator for NPR's Day 2 Day radio program, as well as her duties as conference and art show organizer extraordinaire. Who better to ping with a packet of, "What's in your gadget bag?" (Am I getting good at these, or what? Thanks, Xeni!)

Gadget Overload

Gadget Overload 04/26/2004 04:07 PM
We've all heard stories about convergence when it comes to gadgets, but for many people, all we've experienced is the nee d for a larger and larger gadget bag (and a corresponding increase in chiropractor bills). Of course, even worse than the gadgets themselves, may be each of the different chargers needed to make sure the devices actually run. The question, though, is whether or not this is a temporary state where the possible future we all like to talk about just isn't here yet - or if we're really moving towards a world where more devices is the norm, rather than the other way around. Right now, though, the situation leads to somewhat comic (assuming you're not the person involved) situations like the following: "After downloading some massive high-res files from the digital camera to my laptop, I needed to send them to my coworker's laptop. Of course, I didn't have a wireless local-area network (WLAN) card for that old IBM. Neither laptop had a disk drive. The PC didn't recognize a USB stick. There was no high-speed access at my funky hotel in downtown San Francisco, nor could I log the laptop into the LAN in the convention center's pressroom. And, the pressroom's dial-up connection took so long, the laptop's batteries died, the adapter being back at the hotel room."

The latest victim in Gizmodo's "What's in Your Gadget Bag?" feature is Glenn Fleishman, who comes clean about a truly astonishing amount of crap that he lugs around with him in his electronics kit, described with the loving verbosity of a real geek.
The camera used to take this picture is a Canon S1 IS, a 3-megapixel device that has a 10x optical zoom, interchangeable lenses, and uses four AA batteries. Using 2200 milliamphere hour (mAh) batteries recently, I took 500 photos and movies over the course of a month before swapping out another set and recharging. The camera does 640 by 480, 30 frame per second mono-audio video up to the size of the memory card on top of its anti-jitter-motor photos.

Finally, I always carry a 12-foot extension cord with multiple plugs on the end, and the alternative two-prong adapter for my Apple power supply. You never know how many friends you have until you have extra outlets.

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use 09/09/2004 02:54 PM

If the details in a CNet article are correct, Microsoft's Longhorn will include tools needed(?) by IT managers to put the clamps on people using various gadgets to their work PC's.

Flash drives, iPods, and other doodads — both wired and wireless — that are able to store large amounts of data can be a security risk to the company; unscrupulous employees can use them to load up lots of sensitive documents and carry them out in a pocket. There's also the danger of such devices either accidentally or intentionally introducing viruses and other malicious software into a network.

Companies have been slow to react to the threat posed by digital storage devices in general. It's one that companies have turned a blind eye to for a very long time. If you think back, it used to be that stealing significant secrets was difficult because it was hard to get away with that much paper.

(for some reason I had a flash of Sandy Berger shoving paper in his pants just now!)

Many government agencies and the US military have already banned the on-duty use of some such devices, and many private businesses are following suit. But banning an item and being able to prevent its use are two different things.

Too bad the IT world has to wait for Longhorn to do this; a lot of pilfering can happen between now and then. But I'm sure there are 3rd party developers that are working on something like this as we speak, if they're not out already.

Journo's Iraq gadget-bag 05/06/2004 03:07 AM
Peter Maass, a war correspondant in Iraq, opens his gadget bag in a Gizmodo interview. He's got good kit.
You don't need a hardened computer, though breakdowns are frequent. I use an Apple iBook and took the precaution, during the invasion of Iraq, of covering the screen and keyboard in saran wrap, to keep out the sand. An item I didn't have, but dearly wished for, was night vision goggles. If you have to drive at night with the military in a warzone, as I and other non-embedded journalists did, you can't use any lights (you even have to tape over the red-light indicators on your dashboard). Driving without headlights in a desert behind a tank that doesn't have brakelights is an unpleasurable experience.

Bloodninja: I've got blond hair, blue eyes, I work out a lot
Bloodninja: And I have a part time job delivering for Papa John's in my Geo Storm.
DirtyKate: You sound sexy.. I bet you want me in the back of your car..
Bloodninja: Maybe some other time. You should call up Papa John's and make an order
DirtyKate: Haha! OK
DirtyKate: Hello! I'd like an extra-EXTRA large pizza just dripping with sauce.
Bloodninja: Well, first they would say, "Hello, this is Papa John's, how may I help you", then they tell you the specials, and then you would make your order. So that's an X-Large. What toppings do you want?
DirtyKate: I want everything, baby!
Bloodninja: Is this a delivery?
DirtyKate: Umm...Yes
DirtyKate: So you're bringing the pizza to my house now? Cause I'm home alone... and I think I'll take a shower...
Bloodninja: Good. It will take about fifteen minutes to cook, and then I'll drive to your house.
**pause**
DirtyKate:I'm almost finished with my shower... Hurry up!
Bloodninja: You can't hurry good pizza.

Spamming Referer Logs

Spamming Referer Logs 01/04/2004 12:03 PM

Spammers have sunk to a new low: spamming HTTP referer logs. Now that a lot of bloggers display referrer hits, and a lot of bloggers monitor them to see where they're getting links from, spammers have started sending HTTP requests with their site as the referer, just to get people to follow the links out of curiosity.

Doc Searls noted this phenomenon with Joe Leiberman's comapaign site. The URL "http://www.joe2004.com?starprose" appeared in his referer logs. Since Doc has no link from Leiberman's campaign site, and the lone querystrign arguments indicates that someone is trying to track a clickthrough, it seems that this was inserted there just so a webmaster would follow the link. Looking through my logs, I have this referer too.

Also, just like Doc, I have a referer in my logs to a blog solely about the Paris Hilton sex video. Needless to say, there is no link on that site to Gadgetopia. And here's one to a porn site in Germany. And, yes, I followed both these links because I was trying to figure out why, how, and in what context they linked to my site.

I don't know if I'm more irritated that spammers are pushing their way into every last piece of Internet life, or if I'm more irritated that I fell for it. Before I saw the think on Doc's site and put two and two together, I was blitely following these refer links, trying to figure them out. Score one for the spammers, I suppose.
