Wind Power
Wind Power
01/04/2004 12:04 PMNew farm seen as model for future of wind energy:
Here's a positive story on wind power and a new wind farm in
California.
The 90 turbines at High Winds can generate 162 megawatts
of electricity, enough to power about 75,000 homes, according to
Florida-based FPL Energy, which owns and operates High Winds along
with 30 other wind facilities in 10 states.
Seventy-five thousand homes from 90 turbines? So one turbine could
power...833 homes. I know a lot of small towns around South Dakota
that could benefit from just one turbine. Think about it — one
turbine per small town. Energy problems solved.
I've always wanted to have a windmill powering my house. I'm not
an Earth muffin or a tree-hugger or anything, but I just think it'd be
cool to be self-sufficient like that. Throw in a fresh-water well and
a satellite dish with broadband, and you'd be set.

This new
optical mouse from 3R (not 3M) Solutions has a wind-up cable and USB
connector. With a design obviously inspired by Microsoft products, it
weighs about 75g (every product released from Microsoft in the last 15
years, including their entire WebTV line, has weighed just 75g). Not
much else to say, but I'd likely pick up something like this if it was
also a wireless mouse at the flip of a switch somewhere. I guess that
would make the wind-up part sort of pointless though, huh?

Sure, you don't give a damn, especially because these are Japan

Wind Farm - Growing 150-ton plants in

Wind Farm - Growing 150-ton plants in
the sky
03/20/2003 04:22 PMWind power had a record year in 2002, with 6.8 gigawatts of
new power taking the combined worldwide total to 31 gigawatts. Only
five years ago, 75% of that capacity was not even built yet, and the
generating capacity of individual wind power turbines was a measly 150
kilowatts. Today's standard wind turbines pump out 2-3 megawatts
each, and yet more powerful and efficient prototypes are already being
tested. Wind power is advancing quickly, that's clear. At a recent
alternative energy conference in the US, Christopher Flavin,
President of Worldwatch, stated that "Wind Power is breaking
into the mainstream," and that it will be "the lowest-cost electricity
within the next few years." Today, so-called Wind Farms are
"sprouting up" all over the world. Recent innovations have even made
it possible to install the first wind power in Antarctica, where
the average windspeed is more than 25 mph, and can gust to 150mph.
These "fortified" windmills are smaller and shorter than the 2-3
megawatt models, however. A full-sized windmill stands more than 50
meters high, and that makes them quite difficult to construct.
I visited a "growing" wind farm last year, one that was about
half-way finished, and was given a tour of the site by the
construction manager. What follows is a short pictorial account of
my site-tour, and a description of the processes involved in changing
a fallow, rocky coastline into a productive wind farm.

entirely by VHS and VCD. The stories are very much
simplistic and pulpy (check

preferred

wind turbine, this one is supposed to be quieter and less hazardous to
birds. As you can see from the table below, you need a pretty brisk

Detroit's salt mine
04/04/2005 01:18 PMDavid Pescovitz:
There's a 1,400 acre working salt mine a quarter-mile underneath the
city of Detroit. (Some citizens are complaining that blasting in the
mine is damaging their homes.
Link<
/a>) The mining began at the start of the 20th century. Public tours
were available in the 1980s but the Detroit Salt Company current "Public Tour
Policy" is simply that they don't offer them. From a Detroit News
article:
Mules, lowered by rope down the narrow shaft into the mine, were used
in the early mining operations. Once down in the mines, they stayed
there until they died.
Workers decended in a two-level elevator in which six men pressed
face-to-face during the long ride down.
Getting equipment down into the massive cavern provided many problems.
Pickup trucks, jeeps and large trucks had to be cut up or disassembled
and lowered down the shaft piece by piece, to be reassembled in shop
areas below. Large dump truck tires too big for the shaft had to be
compressed and bound before they would fit down the opening.
In a 1925 Detroit News article, miner Joel Payton told about his salt
mine job. "The only dirty part of this job is going down to work," Mr.
Payton explained.

Wieliczka Salt Mine
04/04/2005 06:25 PMDavid Pescovitz:
My earlier post about Detroit's salt mine reminded underground
explorer
Julia Solis of the magnificent and massive Wieliczka Salt Mine in
Poland. From the Salt Mine Tourist site:
Hidden below the town, situated on 9 levels, reaching 327 m deep
Wieliczka underground is nearly 300 km of galleries and 3000 chambers.
3,5 km route 64-135 m below ground level is available for tourists.
Magnificent chapels, captivating underground lakes, original tools and
equipment, traces of mining works give the comprehension about
people's fight against the elements, their work, passion and beliefs.
Wieliczka miners left lots of salt carvings and murals. After the
sightseeing, tourists can rest in the chamber complex 125 m
underground where they can find souvenir shops, restaurant and a post
office.

Salt Spring Coffee Morning
Salt Spring Coffee Morning
04/25/2004 12:28 PMA good morning to you; I’m having one.
Genx is (finally)
passing almost the whole XML test suite, a nice Bach cantata fills the
air (Leonhardt’s take on BWV12,
Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen,
Zagen), and I’m drinking a damn fine cup of coffee. The
coffee’s from
Salt Spring
Coffee, which is substantially better than the beans from the
local Starbucks. Salt Spring gets a tip o’ the hat because I was
going to write about them sometime last year but their Web site was
totally IE-centric and I couldn’t use it, so I sent them a note
pointing this out, and just checked it out and now it’s fixed; quite
decent in fact. We lean to the
Fre
nch Roast, but some might find this blend a little too exuberantly
dark. If you like good coffee, there’s no substitute for buying
beans, keeping them in the fridge, getting a good grinder and doing it
right. I remain convinced that the classic Melitta pour-through system
can’t be beat, and also convinced that a well-done Norteamericano
filter coffee is the equal of any fancy espresso-based drink, and also
has twice the caffeine, which is good. Not that you’d want to give
up all those nice espresso drinks, there’s a time and place for
everything. When I finish the coffee and knock down a couple more test
cases, we’ll go do some gardening. Life is good.
