06/17/2004 08:53 PMOm Malik is
talking up
a new software product called Blinkx, which he says gives him the
same feeling Google gave him when he first met with the Google folks
early on in their existence. It's a desktop (Windows only)
application that integrates with your various applications to do
contextual search across news, websites, and your computer to try to
match any relevant info to the webpage, email or document you're
reading at the time. Honestly, it sounds like a Windows version of
Nat Friedman's Dashboard
program. I haven't played around with it that much yet, but in
looking at Om's page about Blinkx, it quickly pointed out to me that
the SJ Merc had written about them yesterday as well. Who said
the search space was a done deal? Just as all the big search players

with something that's fairly useful.

this week, as Google added the
ability to
upload some video files
to its servers for storage.
Google has recently launched a video search service, including the
ability to query some
television history . Yahoo , one
major competitor for Google, has also launched its own video search tool .

Google Video Search
Google Video Search
02/01/2005 08:45 PMThe google video search is
pretty freaking cool. You can tell they're scraping show transcripts
which lots of services already have (I seem to recall something called
TVeyes used to email me when the word "blog" or "metafilter" was
mentioned on TV, which used to happen only once or twice a year). But
they also are doing screengrabs which is really interesting, so they
must be pulling down video. They even show me all the local stations
near my zip code that show up in my searches. Maybe someday Google
will be like a iTunes Movie Store where I can one click download
programs I wanted to watch?
Anyway, here are a couple cool searches: the only blogger I could
find mentions of was Nick
Denton and it looks like Movable Type
really was mentioned on Jeopardy and those cards weren't just
photoshop mockups someone posted months ago.
Oh, and of course Lessig shows
up. That guy is everywhere.

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo
all are quietly developing new search technology for ferreting out
snippets of digital video from the vast archives of television
programming. "Google's trying to bring TV to the Web the same way
they're bringing books to the Web," says one media executive. And
while Google's effort is perhaps the most ambitious, Microsoft has its
sights set on the interactive TV market for cable providers and Yahoo
is planning to debut a multimedia search engine and is working with
Web entertainment and news aggregators to index video clips already
online. The Internet's evolution into a viable entertainment platform
will open up vast new video libraries that will require new search
technology to organize and make content relevant to viewers, just as
search engines have done for the billions of pages on the Web. The
task is daunting -- while users can generally discern very quickly if
a Web search result is what they're looking for, each video clip could
take from 15 seconds to several minutes to peruse. To tackle the
problem, Google is recording live TV shows and indexing the related
closed-caption text of the programming. It uses the text to identify
themes, concepts and relevant keywords to use for later searching.
Each result will appear in a thumbnail picture accompanied by some
captioning text. "The business models are too soon to tell, but
everyone is interested," says one person close to the deal. "First,
the meetings are about, 'Don't sue us for nicking your closed
captioning,' and then it's the commercial possibilities."
