Quickbooks: the missing link for small
business Linux
12/19/2004 03:46 PM

Last week I was talking with a small business IT consultant who switches clients' servers to Linux (and Samba) all day long without any problems, but finds few clients interested in moving their desktops to Linux. The reason? "QuickBooks," he said. While there are many small business accounting packages that happily run on Linux, including GnuCash, Quasar, SQL-Ledger, and AccPac, QuickBooks dominates this market. And its loyal users don't want to switch to another package even if it's just as good as -- or possibly better than -- QuickBooks.

Linux small business servers

Linux small business servers 09/20/2004 10:53 AM
Most companies with more than 25 people have their own information technology personnel, hardware, and infrastructure. Where does that leave the small and medium business (SMB) for IT services and systems? Microsoft's Windows Small Business Server 2003 seems like an obvious choice for businesses that already have a big commitment or investment in Windows-based systems, and Novell offers a Small Business Suite for the NetWare faithful, but open source software offers its own small and medium business server options.

Small Tree makes Link Aggregation trial
available
07/20/2004 11:08 AM
Small Tree Communications released a free 30-day trial of its Link Aggregation software on Monday. Link Aggregation uses a process called trunking to combine multiple Ethernet ports into one virtual port that balances bandwidth utilization and automatically switches the data stream to a working port in the event one of them fails. The software runs on a G4 or G5 Mac running Mac OS X v10.2.7 or higher and equipped with at least two Ethernet ports and an IEEE 802.3ad compatible Ethernet switch. Pricing for the full version of Link Aggregation is US$299 for two ports and one group, $499 for four ports and two groups and $699 for unlimited ports and groups. Bundles with one of Small Tree's multi-port Gigabit Ethernet cards are also available.

Having a fast-as-blazes Power Mac or Xserve operating as your file server is one part of the equation, but what happens when your server's network interface is a performance bottleneck? Adding a multiport card is a solution, and to help make that as simple as possible for applications and other computers to work with, Small Tree Communications has released its IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation networking software. Small Tree's software bonds or trunks multiple Ethernet ports into a single "virtual" interface.

Microsoft Small Business Accounting
Targeted for H1 2006

Microsoft Small Business Accounting
Targeted for H1 2006
02/05/2005 09:45 PM
According to Karan Khanna, product manager for Microsoft's forthcoming Small Business Accounting (now in beta testing), Microsoft is aiming for a release of the platform in the first half of 2006. Microsoft had previously announced product availability in late 2005. From the transcript of The .NET Show featuring SBA:

"ROBERT HESS: Now Christin mentioned that we were in the beta phase right now in this application. When does it actually come out into the market for real?

KARAN KHANNA: The plan is in the first half of next year you would have the application available. But it's in beta right now. "

The application, targeting small (1-25) businesses, is currently in <A href="http://blog.sagetechnology.com/techsage/archive/2004/11/06/ 248.aspx" target=_blank>beta testing</A>.  An <A href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/isv/technology/sba" target=_blank>SDK</A> for ISVs should be available soon and those interested should visit the <A href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/isv/technology/sba" target=_blank>ISV Community Center for SBA</A>.  The .NET Show episode includes demos of development with the SDK as well as code samples.  Other exciting news for developers is that, because user security for SBA is built into the SQL database (MSDE is supported), the platform will allow direct access to the database from third party applications or even end users'  - import/analyze via SQL ODBC in spreadsheets, for example.
