"Compatibility is key to bringing digital music to the masses," said
Rob Glaser, founder and CEO, RealNetworks, Inc. "Before Harmony,
consumers buying digital music got locked into a specific kind of
portable player. Harmony changes all that. Thanks to Harmony,
consumers don’t have to worry about technology when buying music.
Now anyone can buy music, move it to their favorite portable device,
and it will just work, just like the way DVD and CDs work."

iPod Firmware Petition
iPod Firmware Petition
07/22/2004 01:22 PMWith the recent release of the
4G iPods, Apple released an iPod firmware update
adding new features/functionality to the iPod. Unfortunately, the new
features are only available to 4G ("click wheel") iPods?leaving the
not-so-old 3G iPods in the dust.
When I first heard about this, my first response was, "Why can?t they
just release the same firmware upgrade for both the 3G and 4G models?"
I don?t know about models older than 3G, but as far as I know, the new
model is exactly the same as the 3G. The firmware could easily work
for both. This seems to be a marketing ploy on Apple?s part. Get the
people who want these simple new features to buy a whole new iPod.
Well, people aren?t buying it.
Enter the
Apple iPod Firmware Petition,
signed by over 3,000 people when this entry was posted, which states
the following:
To: Apple Computer
We, the owners of previous models of the Apple iPod (1G/2G/3G),
believe that we have been snubbed by Apple. With each new generation
some or many of the new features added are only software changes, and
could be easily added to past iPods with a firmware update. But
instead of updating older iPods, Apple has simply ignored older users.
We believe that any new improvements that can be added via firmware to
the older generation iPods should be instituted
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
Being a 3G 15GB owner myself, I must agree. How about you?

Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM
Now I'm sure you'll correct
me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services
offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does
Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player
firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that
"can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?"
Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film
carpenters' entire families.
That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the
company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD
flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest)
ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself.
I'm mostly functional! (Thanks, Antii!)
Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!

Why do iPod lovers had Real?
Why do iPod lovers had Real?
08/18/2004 04:33 PMNelson makes a very good point: I'm puzzled by the backlash against
RealNetworks for figuring out how to get music onto the iPod. Sure, I
think Real makes crummy products too. But they've opened up Apple's
proprietary platform, increasing choice for consumers and lowering
prices. How does the user lose? Now I'm all for bashing Big Evil
Companies that do Stupid Things, but I'm also a fan of cracking open
that little white music jail too. Like Nelson, I don't...

07/30/2004 01:53 AMJust months after RealNetworks approached Apple with open arms to
coordinate their online music strategies only to be spurned;
RealNetworks shocked the world of digital music by introducing
"Harmony." In the aftermath of Harmony's launch, the souring
relationship between RealNetworks and Apple can be described as
anything but harmonious.
Real Hacks the iPod
Real Hacks the iPod
07/26/2004 09:01 AMCNET: RealNetworks breaks Apple's hold on iPod.
RealNetworks announced Monday that it has unlocked some of Apple
Computer's most tightly held technology secrets, giving its music a
way onto the popular iPod digital music player.
There's good news in this announcement, namely the fact
that Real is forcing a tiny bit more openness on Apple, which has been
trying for a winner-take-all approach to digital music. More choice,
and less lock-in, by these companies is always a good idea.
But Real is no prize when it comes to locking customers into another
box: the one the music industry has created with its insistence on
absolute control over digital music. Real's approach to selling songs
is not that at all: It says you're only renting them. At least Apple
says you (mostly) own what you're buying.
Nonetheless, this is progress of a sort.
