NewsGator Offering in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 Enables Users to Read Selected Content, or Watch On-Demand Video Content

DENVER, CO - June 4, 2004 - Today, NewsGator Technologies announced that the recently launched NewsGator Media Edition is featured in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004's "Online Spotlight," an online guide created specifically for Media Center Edition PC customers that offers a central location for them to find the latest third-party services and software, such as music, movie trailers, news updates and even Karaoke.

NewsGator provides a mechanism for Media Center PC users to easily find NewsGator software and services online, without having to separately download anything from the NewsGator web site. Both text and multimedia content is supported, and information that has not already been viewed on another device can be displayed by synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.

"We're excited to be included in Online Spotlight - this will dramatically increase our visibility to the many thousands of Media Center PC users," said Greg Reinacker, President & Founder of NewsGator Technologies.

NewsGator Media Center Edition is included as part of NewsGator Online Services. NewsGator Online Services includes three other content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while on the road. The service also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers, as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed. NewsGator Online Services pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.

Take Center Stage Among Desktops
12/29/2004 11:54 AM
This month's Top 15 Desktop PCs chart highlights two trends: the emergence of powerful new gaming systems that have sophisticated style, and the rapidly growing selection of Media Center PCs, which expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting "I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).

DLL patching hero Rafael has found a great way to enable your MCE 2005 install to join Windows domains. Rafael, known for patching the now famous uxtheme.dll to enable custom Windows XP msstyle themes has found a reg edit in Windows XP Media Center 2005 to unlock the previously "greyed out" join domain option. This method is pretty complex but confirmed to work.

This will allow you to leave and join domains within Windows Media Center Edition 2005.

IT'S LITTLE WONDER that Microsoft Longhorn keeps slipping as the software firm has more than enough on its plate to keep it busy for a year or two. One of those busy little things is 64-bit Windows for X64 and as we've revealed through the course of this week, it has mighty plans for this OS, which will use the same binary for both Intel's EM64T and AMD64.

"Living Room" Interface Allows Users to Read Selected Content, or Watch On-Demand Video Content

DENVER, CO -- April 13, 2004 -- NewsGator Technologies launched NewsGator Media Center Edition today, which allows users to read syndicated content feeds on their TV with Windows XP Media Center Edition. Both text and multimedia content is supported, with an interface designed to be used with a remote control from across the room. NewsGator Media Center Edition shows information that has not already been viewed on another device by synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.

Audio and video content is only one click away. Users see visual cues when a feed contains multimedia content; they can then instantly view this content using the remote control. There are a number of featured feeds for the launch, including a video feed from Microsoft.

This is the latest step in the "any time, any place, any device" strategy that distinguishes the NewsGator product line. Users typically use more than one device throughout the day, such as Microsoft Outlook at work, a mobile phone on the road, a web browser in their home office, and a TV in their living room. NewsGator Online Services allows users to read one set of content from any of these devices, without any duplication. The combined power of NewsGator Media Center Edition and Online Services offers customers a productive and fun way to access their personalized subscriptions and information from any device, whenever they need it.

"NewsGator Media Center Edition is a great example of cutting edge ISV innovation on the Microsoft platform," said Sanjay Parthasarathy, corporate vice president of Developer and Platform Evangelism at Microsoft Corporation. "The deep integration of technologies like XML and RSS, combined with rich multimedia, and presented on a device as pervasive as the television, gives consumers access to the information they care about, where and when they want to view it, truly delivering on the vision of a connected home. We're proud to work with NewsGator to help bring this innovative application to market for our mutual customers."

NewsGator Online Services also includes other three content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while on the road.

The service also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers, as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed.

NewsGator Media Center Edition is included with the NewsGator Online Services subscription service, and is available immediately at http://services.newsgator.com. Pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.

Media Center Extender for Xbox Reviewed

Media Center Extender for Xbox Reviewed 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

media_center_exrev.jpg imagePaul Thurrott has a review up of the Xbox Media Center Extender kit—the package that lets you stream Media Center recorded content to remote TVs via your Xbox—and it's pretty much a must-read for anyone considering using the (fairly) recently-released devices. While it has a lot to offer to Media Center PC owners, a few glaring oversights, like a remote thats incompatible with other Media Center devices (and vice-versa) and the decision by Microsoft to force users to keep the software DVD in the Xbox at all times instead of loading it onto the hard drive keep it from being a clear winner. His short take is that it's good for those already hitched to Microsoft's wagon, but it isn't going to win any new fans.

Amitech Media Center PC

Amitech Media Center PC 08/09/2004 09:46 AM

amitech_mediacenter.jpg imageThere's nothing rotten about this Danish-born Amitech media center, a small form factor PC with a built-in FM radio and TV tuner that can record both television shows, radio, and CDs. And while the specs look pretty good, with a 3-gigahertz Pentium 4 in the nougaty center, the best part is the price: the Amitech Media Center should retail for under $1,000 USD.

My Danish is a little bit cheesed, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the unit, while running Windows XP, does not run Windows Media Center. If any of you can parse the Danes' internetstik I'd be happy to take corrections. (Thanks, Jakub!)

Alienware Media Center

Alienware Media Center 08/02/2004 01:29 PM

Alienware is innovating again, this time with an all-in-one, wall-mountable 30-inch TFT/LCD widescreen TV with an integrated Windows Media Center PC inside. Al ienware DHD systems, which are based on Hy-Tek's TekPanel 300 enclosure, will feature “Intel Pentium 4 processors up to 3.4 GHz and the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 operating system. ATI Radeon graphics, configurable up to X800 XT Platinum Edition with 256MB DDR3 video RAM, and optical drives up to 12x DVD±R/RW, provide an unparalleled cinematic experience. Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound completes the package with superior audio quality.”

We not sure how popular this type of TV/PC combo device will be, but “Microsoft is excited about the introduction of Alienware DHD systems,” said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing for the Windows XP Consumer Product Line at Microsoft Corp. “The integration of Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 within a self-contained, multi-functional LCD panel is a great example of the innovative designs that consumers are demanding that change the way they can experience digital media in the home.”

At first glance, this TV/PC concept may seem very appealing, but will consumers be ready to spend $6,500 - 8,000 on a flat panel TV that will have an outdated computer components inside it in the next two to three years?
