According to Intelliseek, Yahoo News was the most cited news source on blogs in 2004. Congrats to the Yahoo News team! I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that Yahoo News is very blog and aggregator friendly? They've been pumping out RSS feeds and allowing you to subscribe to a news search as RSS for a while now. I think there's a connection. I can't wait to see even more of Yahoo becoming blog and RSS...

Yahoo News Tracking Political Blogs

Yahoo News Tracking Political Blogs 08/30/2004 02:35 AM
Tip of the hat to The Unofficial Yahoo Weblog for pointing out the Election Blog Roundup on Yahoo News. While the page says one thing: Our goal is to aggregate a diverse selection of political blogs and let you sample a variety of opinions as election season heats up. It seems to do another. While it does provide a blogroll of sorts on the right side of the page, the main section is basically an aggregator devoted to showing the...

Rather than try to make the usual sweeping predictions about what the future holds for the computer hardware and software industries or even just for Linux and open source, I'm going to make some predictions about how tech news will be covered in the next year. Let's start by saying a minimum of 5000 articles (give or take 4900) will be written in 2004 declaring Linux "finally ready for the desktop," up from 3000 (give or take 2900) similar articles in 2003.

NewsFire monitors news, bl0gs, more 12/29/2004 01:48 PM
Australian developer David Watanabe has released version 0.5 of NewsFire, his RSS (Really Simple Syndication) reader that enables you to monitor news sites, blogs and other online publications that offer RSS feeds. The new version adds title and summary list styles and allows you to hide feeds as well as select smart feeds as a condition in other smart feeds. NewsFire supports the RSS and Atom feed formats and imports and exports OPML, the standard file format for news feeds. You can also import feeds from another newsreader. The software is still in Beta and is a free download; Watanabe plans on ultimately releasing it as shareware.

NYT, Fox News, others on bl0gs and

NYT, Fox News, others on bl0gs and
tsunami disaster
12/29/2004 08:31 PM
Xeni Jardin: John Schwartz wrote an insightful piece for the New York Times this week about the role blogs play in covering and responding to the tsunami disaster. I was interviewed for the piece, but the people who really have something interesting and valuable to say are the ones over there, on the ground -- and the folks rolling up their geek sleeves to assist.

From relaying first-person accounts (like Sanjay/Morquendi's SMS reports in Sri Lanka), to kick-starting relief efforts (tsunamihelp.blogspot.com, and the Post-Tsunami Reconnect project), to questioning media coverage ( Ethan Zuckerman's post about Myanmar), there's a lot going on here The amateur-shot image shown here ran in the NYT story. Snip:

"At sumankumar.com, Nanda Kishore, a contributor, offered photos and commentary from Chennai, India: 'Some drenched till their hips, some till their chest, some all over and some of them were so drenched that they had already stopped breathing. Men and women, old and young, all were running for lives. It was a horrible site to see. The relief workers could not attend to all the dead and all the alive. The dead were dropped and the half alive were carried to safety.' His postings included a photo of a body on a sidewalk with a buffalo walking by. 'It now seems prophetic," he wrote, "for according to the Hindu mythology, Lord Yama (the god of death) rides on a buffalo.'"

Link to story.
Fox News did a segment on this subject yesterday. I spoke with anchor Jon Scott about some of the blogosphere reports we've been pointing to from BoingBoing in recent days. Here are video clips of the Fox News segment: Real, Windows (Many thanks, Mike Outmesguine, for TiVoing and kindly hosting.)

There have been a number of related stories out in the past 24 hours in the Wall Street Journal (Link, sub required), Libération (France) (Link), the Inquirer (UK) (Link), and AP (Link) . (Thanks to BB readers including Jean-Luc for pointers).

Thunderbird News & Blogs Virtual
Memory Leak
12/19/2004 03:25 PM
I really like the News & Blogs RSS aggregation feature in Thunderbird. Particularly how it loads the webpage instead of just the article summary. However, I think there may be a virtual memory leak. I have about 30 feeds that check for updates every 60 minutes. If I leave Thunderbird running for a few days, particularly over the weekend, the memory and virtual memory usage keeps adding up: I've even had a few "Out of Virtual Memory" Windows errors. I've had this error in Thunderbird 0.8 and the Oct 21st nightly. And on both my home (XP) and work (W2K Server) machines. Anyone else have the same issue? Is there a bug for this? I'll ask here since Bugzilla search is pretty much useless.

The Marc Canter show (reprise)

We drove down to Walnut Creek to spend some time at Marc Canter’s house. Marc is probably best known as one of the co-founders of Macromedia (then called MacroMind), and is considered one of the fathers of ‘multimedia’. According to Marc, software is the new rock ‘n’ roll, and open source / open content is a form of activism that is taking back control of the internet and it’s content. He spoke passionately about the Creative Commons licencing scheme, and the promotion of ‘open’ standards and content. What was now required was a way to join up and manage the digital lifestyle. The solution: Digital Lifestyle Aggregators. Marc Canter Checkered Cab After the interview Marc played some blues guitar for us and performed some opera.
