Microsoft's web browser, Internet Explorer, is continuing its slow but steady slide in market share. According to fresh numbers from web metrics firm Websidestory, IE's share has slipped 1.8 per cent in the last three months. While still far and away the market leader, the browser now has a 93.7 per cent share, compared to 95.5 per cent in June.

Anyway, I have a check for some GBP laying around, so I called them to find out what they'd charge and which exchange rate they'd use and so...

Clueless in Berkeley

Clueless in Berkeley 07/12/2004 04:07 PM
I have written before of my love for my favorite feature in the Berkeley Daily Planet, the Police Blotter. Today while reading it, I ran across this absolute gem which caused me to lose a mouthful of hot Peet's coffee in front of the Cheeseboard. Knife-Wielder Earns Cellular Domicile A 48-year-old Berkeley man found himself with a new and tightly confined residence after police busted him for flashing a knife at a fellow citizen near the corner of Center Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way at 9:37 a.m. Friday. The felon seems to have overlooked that building on the corner and all those blue-clad badge-wearing folks who pass through its portals en route to their black-and-white cars. (For those of you unfamiliar with Berkeley geography, our new police headquarters is at the corner of MLK and Center.) How do you get a job writing stuff like this? I want one. It made my day....

Rise of the Clueless 07/19/2004 09:54 AM
In Wired's July issue, Contributing writer Cory Doctorow writes about the movie I, Robot, in a slam at the late Dr. Isaac Asimov titled Rise of the Machines. I would rather Wired had found someone who had actually read more than two or three Asimov short stories. There is a lot in this article that is debatable but presented as concrete fact, and other "facts" which are downright false.

Scene

Clueless Article About Canada's Wi-Fi
Scene
02/16/2004 01:25 PM
This writer seems to enjoy writing as though he's an authority when it's clear he's not: He's read all the hype about Wi-Fi but gets enough wrong that he obviously hasn't done his own research. His general point is that Canada is behind the United States in deploying hotspots. But he hasn't got very good research to back that up. His strongest piece of evidence seems to be a conversation he had recently with one computer programmer who had never heard of Wi-Fi. He goes on to say that the market is primed to change dramatically because Canada's largest carriers said they'd create a unified standard to let customers roam between their networks. This so-called standard was developed without any of the major existing Canadian Wi-Fi operators, such as FatPort, and none of the four carriers involved had deployed hotspots when they set the roaming standard. It's also just a "standard" (how they'll handle billing, etc.), not a roaming deal. So the carriers could deploy networks and still not roam. (Meanwhile, FatPort has built hundreds of locations and secured roaming with several international networks.) He also pointed to a recent study that said no hotspots' business model could succeed if the only revenue source was connection fees. That study is bad news for cafes in the U.S., he says, because many of them offer access for free. But the two aren't related. Free hotspot operators have a totally different business model than those that charge. He closes by pointing out "guerilla Wi-Fi warriors" in Canada who warchalk. Warchalking is a great idea and testament to the community behind Wi-Fi, but who has actually seen a symbol? If this writer's point is that Wi-Fi hasn't taken off in Canada, then it's doubtful that people there are actually warchalking....

A Business Model For WiFi Aggregation

A Business Model For WiFi Aggregation 01/09/2004 09:50 PM
Robert X. Cringely's latest column discusses his idea for a killer WiFi aggregator business model that makes some sense - but could be very difficult from some significant reasons. He correctly points out the problems with current WiFi aggregator business models: they have way too little coverage and way too many players have their hands in the pie. For each dollar spent at a hotspot, a portion needs to go to the hotspot owner, the owner of the network and the aggregator (and potentially others) - and there just isn't that much money being spent at hotspots in the first place. His solution is that we need more hotspots, and the way to get more hotspots is to give away the equipment free. Basically, have a company that will give you free WiFi equipment in exchange for adding your hotspot to their network and giving you free access to the entire network. This way, he believes, an aggregator would quickly get to one million hotspots and pretty much guarantee the necessary level of coverage. The money, then, would come from others who pay the subscription fee to get on the network - and since the coverage is so great, and the aggregator no longer needs to share that revenue with the hotspots, people will be willing to pay up. Maybe. I'm certainly a fan of leveraging "free" in a promotion to build a business model, but not when that "free" is very costly. In order to get this going, the company would need to give away those million access points (and, probably, handle tech support for them) before they start making money. While you can bet they'd get a volume discount (and APs are getting cheaper every day), it's still a pretty big capital chunk to eat. Then, there are two other big problems I see. First, which he brushes off, most internet providers say sharing your connection is a violation of terms of service. Sure, there's the Speakea sy exception, but it's still not too common, and I'm not so convinced (as Cringely is) that they'll just rollover when they find out what's happening. The second problem is much more fundamental. I now have two choices if I want to use this fairly vast network of access points: (1) pay a monthly fee or (2) offer to host my own hotspot - where I get free equipment and free service. Guess what I'm going to do? Is there any reason not to get their free equipment just to get free access everywhere else? Who are the suckers who are actually going to pay for this service instead of just signing up to be a provider?
