Coming soon to an urban center near you: wireless connectivity for your laptop or PDA, brought to you by City Hall. At least that's the hot trend among U.S. municipalities, 48 of which now offer wireless access, according to a recent report. Most municipal systems are the result of public-private partnerships, and many offer some level of free access. The first website (1) is an overview of the wireless downtown phenomenon which notes the importance of such systems for local economic development. The second link (2) is to a fact sheet about Wireless Philadelphia, which, as one of the first and largest downtown wi-fi projects, helped spark the national trend. The third website is a node map of NYCwireless (3) and the 147 access points where that municipal network currently can be accessed. The fourth link
leads to a case study of chaska.net (4) , which provides wireless access to the 7,500 homes and 18,000 residents of that Minneapolis suburb. The fifth website is a pdf (5) of a slick brochure produced by the city of Gainesville, Fla., to promote its Digital Downtown project. The sixth link is to a Sacramento Bee editorial (6) making the case for downtown wireless. The seventh website is a free database listing 10,840 wireless access points in 767 locations worldwide (7) , organized by geographic region. Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AM
The meat of the article is: “…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system defaults – everyone knows them. Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is definitely not unique. Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID, that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID. Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better. Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort. Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it is a strong password. Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a hacker to compromise your home network. Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure. Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker does make it onto your network.”

Off to Cleveland 04/29/2004 07:15 PM
Very early Friday morning, I'll be headed to Cleveland for Brandt's wedding. Other blogger friends attending are: Dan, Kasia, and Morgan. A few folks have asked if there'd be time to meet up in Cleveland, but I doubt it. This is going to be surgical strike trip. Arrive Friday afternoon, wedding on Saturday, head home on Sunday. There's not much time left for other stuff. On the weather font, it looks like rain there. Ugh. I'm gonna miss the sun...

Cleveland airport gets Wi-Fi from SBC: I should really have left this item to senior editor Nancy Gohring, who hails from within spittin' distance of Cleveland, but SBC FreedomLink is now the operator of Wi-Fi service at that town's airport. The interesting twist in this installation is that there will be Internet kiosks in the airport as well as the SBC service. I've had mixed feelings lately about posting every single airport announcement, especially as smaller markets have become unwired: at some point, just another airport is just another airport, unless you live or work near it. It's a fundamental problem with covering wireless in general and Wi-Fi in particular as it matures. There's more and more news, and it starts to blur into much of the same. I see sometimes a dozen stories a week about a small town that gets its first Wi-Fi-enabled cafe, or another community project that unwires a park or public area. This is just to say that the proof of the success of the top-down and bottom-up movements in wireless communication are starting to permeate all media. When I appeared on a local NPR affiliate to talk about Voice over IP (VoIP) and Internet telephony on their morning program recently, the host needed a technical primer in VoIP, which is quite new to most people, but through around Wi-Fi and wireless terms with great abandon and fluency....

I had fun this weekend in Cleveland. I haven't had a chance to post (or even upload) the 200+ pictures taken with my camera yet. So, until you can see photos of semi-drunken people you don't know in dark places you don't know, I leave you with a few things from this weekend. It's possible to get nearly a dozen people...
