Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox

Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox

Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox 12/19/2004 03:25 PM

Google recently released Google Desktop (for Windows users), as you are probably already aware. Google Desktop is a "desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, chats, and the web pages you've viewed." Great! The hang-up: the program searches web data — e.g. cached pages and bookmarks — in only one browser, Internet Explorer. Where you come in: Google has provided a feature request form and specifically the option to request support for Mozilla Firefox. Get to submitting. And if you have another minute of time to spare, offer Mozilla Thunderbird as an additional request in the "Suggestion" text box. Pinder, does this entry qualify as a spin-off to the Google Browser trilogy? Update: A F.A.Q. entry has been created by Google Desktop — possibly in response to many directed questions — with information on the current status of compatibilty between the browser and the search application.

After all the recent announcements concerning cooperation and integration between the Mozilla Foundation and the GNOME Foundation, I decided to compare GNOME's Ephiphany Web browser to Mozilla's Firefox. I installed Epiphany 1.0.6 and Firefox 0.8 on a Debian "Sarge" GNU/Linux system. After about a week, I came away feeling that Firefox is unquestionably the better browser.

Firefox RSS Support

Firefox RSS Support 09/16/2004 03:26 PM

I just finished looking at the code implementing Mozilla's RSS support (aka 'Live Bookmarks') and came up with these tips:

To make the orange RSS button show up on the bottom right corner of Firefox when your webpage is displayed, add following HTML fragment to your webpage's HEAD element for each feed.

<LINK type="{feedMimeType}" rel="alternate"
  title="{feedTitle}" href="{feedUrl}">

where {feedMimeType} can be:

application/rss+xml
application/atom+xml
application/x.atom+xml

if {feedMimeType} is not one of the above then {feedTitle} has to be one of the following (case-sensitive):

rss
RSS
Atom

Otherwise, {feedTitle} can be anything.

To make feed items appear correctly in Firefox bookmark sidebar, your feed items *must* have both non-empty 'title' and 'link' tags.

And what do I think of Firefox's so called RSS support?  Words like crappy and useless comes to mind.

Fresh Air's Terry Gross interviews Larry and Sergey. Some highlights: Terry asks if there are countries that block Google results. Their first answer: the United States. "The United States has the Digital Millenium Copyright Act [...] there are probably a handful of sights -- maybe a hundred web pages are blocked for that reason. [...] In France and Germany there are some rules against Nazi sites [...] a handful of sites are blocked. [...] The country can block certain sites in some countries [...] the most famous case for us was [...] China." Terry noted that when she searched for "Google" and clicked I'm Feeling Look and nothing happened! "In Computer Science we call that recursion. [...] Sergey's giving me a dirty look." And then Sergey suggested it was "idempotence". Terry asks if they feel like Revenge of the Nerds-type geeks. "I hope we can serve as positive examples.
