Firefox and Rendering Slashdot

Firefox and Rendering Slashdot 12/19/2004 03:25 PM

I've been getting this error viewing various pages at Slashdot with Firefox on and off since about version 0.8. Hitting refresh renders the page properly though. Is this an issue with Firefox or with Slashdot's ancient markup?

Browser Page Rendering

Browser Page Rendering 06/10/2004 09:32 AM

Testing Page Load Speed: Here's a really interesting look at what a browser does to render a Web page by the guys over at Mozilla. It brings up all sorts of stuff you may not have considered about your pages.

So what happens when you go to a URL like cnn.com? Well, the first step is to start fetching the data from the network. This is typically done on a thread other than the main UI thread.

As the data for the page comes in, it is fed to an HTML tokenizer. It's the tokenizer's job to take the data stream and figure out what the individual tokens are, e.g., a start tag, an attribute name, an attribute value, an end tag, etc. The tokenizer then feeds the individual tokens to an HTML parser.

The parser's job is to build up the DOM tree for a document. Some DOM elements also represent subresources like stylesheets, scripts, and images, and those loads need to be kicked off when those DOM nodes are encountered.

Joi notes that Dan Gillmor is opting out of Plaxo. Great idea, but I thought that I'd done this already.

Hrm.

I just spent the last five minutes dropping every single address I have into their form and responding to their confirmations.

Hopefully I never get another request from them. If anyone wants my vCard, all they have to do is ask.

07/01/2004 08:50 AM
Swedish developer Illuminate Labs announced on Wednesday the release of Turtle, a new Maya lighting renderer that was in Beta testing at more than 200 sites during the previous 13 months. Turtle 1.0 can render scenes both within Maya and as a stand-alone application. It features raytracing and global illumination algorithms called LiquidLight, 3D motion blur, true depth-of-field, animation and batch rendering, support for Maya shading networks and more. Turtle requires Maya 6 and sells for US$1,199 per workstation license, which comes with a graphic user interface (GUI), and $999 per render node license, which lacks a GUI.

Pixels 3D 5.0 doesn't provide the ultimate tool set for creating 3-D animations and still images. But at $399, it's certainly an excellent choice for beginners. And it may be a reasonable option for professional artists who don't need the elaborate features of high-end, and more expensive, 3-D tools. By Sean Wagstaff (Macworld via MyAppleMenu)
