(This is also my col umn todayin the San Jose Mercury News, and an update on yesterday's brief comment.) Monday morning's newsthat Oracle will buy PeopleSoft for a small premium over Oracle's most recent offer was almost the ultimate in anticlimaxes. It was a given, once the U.S. antitrust lawsuit against the deal failed in early fall, that a buyout would happen unless an unexpected white knight showed up to buy PeopleSoft. Business software maker Oracle reduced its hostile takeover bid for rival PeopleSoft to $7.7 billion Friday, shaving nearly 20%, or $1.7 billion, from its previous offer to reflect its prey's wilting market value.
