D
OWN FOR THE COUNT At around 8:50, Soubirous’s campaign manager,
Brian Floyd, received a call from an election observer in Temecula
informing him that the vote count had been stopped – apparently by
Registrar Mischelle Townsend herself. The reason was not made clear.
So Floyd and another Soubirous campaigner named Art Cassel jumped into
a car and drove to Townsend’s office to investigate. Sure enough,
the counting area appeared to be near-deserted. But then they noticed
two men huddled at one of the vote tabulation computers.

Microsoft is not down for the count
12/24/2004 01:15 PMNo court ordered anything has ever really made any real difference
with Microsoft. Of course they abide by court rulings, after all, they
do play by the rules set out for them - after a huge court battle
anyway. Well, those that feel that MS is down for the count had better
think again. Just because they have been ordered to remove the Windows
Media Player from their Windows operating system, does not mean
that…

08/27/2004 01:30 PMWord Counthttp://www.wordcount.org/Words are used as invectives, toasts, and tirades, among other
forms of human expression. As a type of artistic experiment, Jonathan
Harris of Flaming Toast Productions decided to create this engaging
website that documents the 86,000 most frequently used English words,
ranked in order of commonality. Nay-sayers beware: This is no simple
listing of the words, contained within a mundane series of connected
web pages. As visitors quickly realize, this articulated end-to-end
listing of these 86,000 words features scaled versions of each word,
giving a "visual barometer of relevance." As the site notes, "The goal
is for the user to feel embedded in the language, sifting through
words like an archaeologist through sand, awaiting the unexpected
find." Interestingly enough, the word "God" is one word from "began"
(which is at number 375), and six words from "war." Budding
urbanologists will find it interesting that the word "Chicago" is at
number 6,692 and that "Shanghai" makes into the list at 18,242. [From

12/26/2003 02:55 PMLots and lots of companies have tried and failed at the online grocery
game. Even before the biggest and most famous failure, Webvan, came
on the scene, many people thought that the space was dead from folks
like Peapod who had tried and failed to make a go of it. In the last
year there had been some talk about how brick-and-mortar grocery
stores like Safeway and Albertson's were making progress with
integrated online offerings, but apparently even that model isn't
working for everyone. Popular upscale grocer
Whole Foods has shut down its own online operations, though,
they don't give much of a reason why.

controversy over speed cameras that tended to make
spectacularly amusing mistakes? Well, that hasn't stopped the UK from
trying to move forward with special infrared cameras designed to do
even more advanced things, such as
counting
the number of passengers in your car to prevent cheaters from
using the carpool/HOV lanes. The researchers working on the
technology claim that it can distinguish between a human and other
non-human passenger items such as a mannequin or a large dog. Of
course, it's not as imaginative as the CarpoolCheats.org folks, who
went around snapping pictures of people cheating their way in the
carpool lane, but that site's been shut down by angry carpool
cheaters, unfortunately.

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM
The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives.

JVC's Mystery Hard Drive Camcorders
Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM
Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras
announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as
their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard
drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool
and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are
the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because
they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support
this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to
hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get
something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500,
though).
Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps
in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.
