12/24/2004 12:45 PMLauren wanted to visit her Mum on the farm for a few days before
Christmas. The world is well into its pre-Christmas slowdown and I’m
coding away on Zeppelin these days, which doesn’t require much Net
access, so I said OK. So I’m sitting in front of NetBeans except
when I’m out pushing the kid’s sled down the hill or visiting with
the cows. Zeppelin, like most software, has lots of layers, and I
haven’t fiddled with the bottom-layer APIs for a while. Except for I
did, added this trivial little method that Couldn’t Possibly Go
Wrong, but (arrrrgh) no JUnit test to be sure. Which cost me the best
part of a day of debugging a completely incomprehensible application
full stop because down at the bottom level there was an
args[0] instead of
args[1]. To all those who
sat in rooms at one point or another this last couple of years and
listened to me drone on in a superior tone of voice about the extreme
importance and Karmic excellence of unit testing, you are now entitled
to one large snicker in my general direction.

really matter as it wasn't a federal election. The state wins here)

01/26/2004 10:14 AMI live in the 12th Congressional District in California. We're a
pretty sensible (you might call us liberal) bunch. Over 80% oppose the
war. Almost 70% oppose the "Patriot Act."
Yet our Congressman -- a wonderful and amazing figure, Tom Lantos --
doesn't vote the way his district thinks. He has supported the war. He
has supported the Patriot Act.
I haven't done this before, and I'm not going to do this much again,
but this gap between who we are and how we are represented has led me
to help Congressman Lantos' opponent -- Ro Khanna. Ro's a bright,
young, committed Democrat, committed to representing the views of his

Who would Osama vote for?
Who would Osama vote for?
07/20/2004 09:09 PMPaul Krugman is one of the few voices in the mainstream media willing
to speak plain truth to power, and he did a bang-up job with today's
column, The Arabian Candidate. As he points out, Bush has done
everything Osama bin Landen might have hoped for: The Arabian
candidate wouldn't openly help terrorists. Instead, he would serve
their cause while pretending to be their enemy. After an attack, he
would strike back at the terrorist base, a necessary action to
preserve his image of toughness, but botch the follow-up, allowing the
terrorist leaders to escape. Once the public's attention shifted, he
would systematically squander the military victory: committing too few
soldiers, reneging on promises of economic aid. Soon, warlords would
once again rule most of the country, the heroin trade would be
booming, and terrorist allies would make a comeback. Meanwhile, he
would lead America into a war against a country that posed no imminent
threat. He would insinuate, without saying anything literally false,
that it was somehow responsible for the terrorist attack. This
unnecessary war would alienate our allies and tie down a large part of
our military. At the same time, the Arabian candidate would neglect
the pursuit of those who attacked us, and do nothing about regimes
that really shelter anti-American terrorists and really are building
nuclear weapons. Again, he would take care to squander a military
victory. The Arabian candidate and his co-conspirators would block all
planning for the war's aftermath; they would arrange for our army to
allow looters to destroy much of the country's infrastructure. Then
they would disband the defeated regime's army, turning hundreds of
thousands of trained soldiers into disgruntled potential insurgents.
... Who knows? The Arabian candidate might even be able to deprive
America of the moral high ground, no mean trick when our enemies are
mass murderers, by creating a climate in which U.S. guards torture,
humiliate and starve prisoners, most of them innocent or guilty of
only petty crimes. ... Last but not least, by blatantly exploiting the
terrorist threat for personal political gain, he would undermine the
nation's unity in the face of its enemies, sowing suspicion about the
government's motives. Unfortunately, Osama bin Laden doesn't vote. He
uses the murder of innocents to get what he wants. What worries me is
what happens when the two people with the most to gain from Bush
remaining in power...

Can You Hack the Vote?
Can You Hack the Vote?
08/05/2004 06:01 PMElectronic voting systems have drawn fire from courts, lawmakers, and
citizens groups--and now they're under attack by hackers. It's an
organized assault, too. E-voting technology expert Rebecca Mercuri, a
Harvard research fellow who has been outspoken in her opposition to
such systems, has issued a "Hack the Vote" challenge, trying
to illustrate what she calls their unreliability and vulnerability.
She unveiled the so-called Mercuri Challenge at the
recent Black Hat Briefings and Defcon 12 security
conferences.
Preelection Action Urged
Mercuri suggests
electronic voting machines be hacked during their
preelection testing, so officials will abandon them before an actual
election. "People in the election community say this technology
is bulletproof," Mercuri says. "It's not." She
especially opposes use of electronic voting technology in its current
state, which does not allow for a
verifiable backup. "I'm not asking anyone to
break any laws, we just want the opportunity to hack e-voting systems
to prove that it can or cannot be done," she says.
