09/24/2004 03:29 AMTV content aggregation is not a business for network operators, who
will do better to form partnerships with satellite and cable operators
to sell TV over broadband. Gross margins on TV can be as low as 20%
but operators need TV services to compete with triple-play
competitors. Fixed broadband (BB) operators providing TV reduce the
net present value (NPV) of their business model over the first five
years, according to Analysys calculations for this report. Gambling
games are the most profitable entertainment option for network

09/15/2004 01:39 PMSome folks from Mobile Pipeline have been out and about in North

testing Nextel's wireless broadband test system using
Flarion's FLASH-OFDM technology that
generated so
much attention earlier this year. The reviewers are quite
impressed. They found it an adequate replacement for fixed broadband,
but (more impressively) discovered it worked almost as well in motion,
while driving around. Mobility is where the real power of wireless
broadband will be - because it will let people do things that they
simply can't do now. It's worth noting, of course, for all the talk
about WiMax, the mobile WiMax standard is still a ways away, and all
the initial deployments will only be focused on fixed offerings.
Nextel, of course, still hasn't committed to Flarion, and is known to
be testing a few other wireless broadband solutions as well (though,
with less fanfare). However, no matter what technology (or
technologies) you're betting on, it looks like real mobile wireless
broadband is on the way.

Sweden to Get Broadband Wireless Network
08/27/2004 01:31 PMUsing EU funds, TeliaSonera will help build a broadband wireless
network in a region of Sweden that is without broadband access: The
network will be built with so-called "pre-WiMax" equipment, or gear
that hasn't been certified WiMax but may receive certification once
that process begins. This is precisely the type of network that many
experts say WiMax is ideal for--covering remote areas that aren't
served by wired broadband. Ultimately, such networks could be built in
developing nations but initially the networks and products may not be
inexpensive enough to serve such markets....

09/14/2004 02:51 PMA few announcements have been made over the last couple of days about
new broadband wireless deployments. Two come from Alvarion, including
one where Telekom Serbia will build networks to support voice and data
in suburban and rural Serbia. Closer to home, Alvarion also announced
that its gear will supply a broadband wireless backbone network in
Maryland, connecting counties that are part of a project connecting
libraries and supplying mobile wireless for public safety workers. In
other broadband wireless news, Redline said that its equipment will
provide backhaul for a wireless network being built in a region of
Manitoba, Canada. Wi-LAN, a Calgary, Canada-based supplier, said that
its products are being used by various customers, including a large
ISP, in Malaysia. AirRover Wi-Fi, a company based in Baton Rouge, La.,
signed an agreement in principal to build city-wide mesh Wi-Fi
networks in a couple of cities in the Philippines. It must be
refreshing for vendors to be making these kinds of sales, even before
they are actually selling certified WiMax gear. There has been a fear
that customers would delay buying decisions as they wait for certified
WiMax gear. Perhaps the buzz around WiMax has generally helped to
legitimatize broadband wireless so that some customers decide it will
pay off for them to deploy now rather than wait for standard gear....

12/19/2004 03:18 PM Towerstream issued a press release explaining how the FCC's subsidy
ruling pumps broadband wireless: I reproduce their press release after
the jump because it's an interesting bit of analysis. The FCC ruled
(PDF news release) that incumbent carriers, the Baby Bells et al., no
longer need to subsidize competitive carriers in urban areas for their
high-speed commercial digital services; this doesn't cover DSL, but
rather T-1 (1.544 Mbps) and DS3 (45 Mbps) services. This means,
Towerstream says, that the price of a wired T-1 and DS3 loop will
increase because it can. Thus, their syllogism goes, it's now even
more price competitive to go with their wireless high-speed,
high-availability service....

Heads up, ye owners of the
popular Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. Even if you
disable remote administration, the router will still allow users
sharing your WiFi network to access administration web pages. That's
not the end of the world unless you haven't changed your admin
password, which if you're like most of us, coddled by fire-and-forget
technology, you probably haven't. If you aren't taking any more steps
to secure your router, at least do yourself a favor and change the
default password to something else, preferably not the name of a pet,
child, or the lady down the hall you've been sleeping with that you
think, hey, nobody knows about but really, seriously, we all
totally know.

McCaw Launches Clearwire
McCaw Launches Clearwire
06/02/2004 12:51 AMThe Wall Street Journal reports Craig McCaw to launch nationwide
wireless Internet service on Wednesday: As Steve Stroh reported a
month ago, McCaw's Clearwire will be an alternative to cell-based data
networks and fixed-location or even citywide Wi-Fi offer 1.5 to 2
megabits per second. This is clearly downstream speed; upstream isn't
noted. Service will launch this summer in two cities and expand to 20
within a year, the report says. The service is described as portable,
but not mobile, which is a key distinction: portable means it can be
used easily in many places; mobile means it can be used while in
motion (walking or driving often having a distinct difference).
Cellular services are mobile and portable. Wi-Fi is typically neither
except in newer cases of hotzones or citywide Wi-Fi in which its
certainly portable, and may also be mobile at the right speeds and in
the right locations. According to Stroh's research in April and May,
Clearwire will use technology from NextNet, a company acquired by
McCaw. The Journal and Stroh both note that this is interim technology
that will ultimately transition to WiMax equipment, although Nancy
Gohring has reported that U.S.-capable WiMax gear may not be available
until as late as 2006....
