Operators Billions, Says Analysys
02/01/2005 08:49 PMIn 2003, excess customer churn cost European mobile operators EUR4.5
billion in unnecessary expenses and EUR5.6 billion in lost revenue –
equivalent to 8.6% of total mobile revenues. Controlling churn so that
rates are lower than competitors’ is an effective mechanism to
continue to grow revenues in a saturating market. Analysys warns that
mobile operators must pursue cost-effective churn-management
strategies that suit their market position, or face significant loss
of market share over the coming years. [PRWEB Jan 29, 2005]

Mobile Operators Want Yet Another
Standard
12/31/2004 05:18 AMHow very typical... After all the hype about 3G -- which so far has
failed to live up to expectations, and all the impending hype about
other wireless broadband technologies such as WiMAX and FLASH-OFDM, it
looks like a bunch of mobile operators have decided to toss all that
and
get to work on a completely
new standard for mobile broadband, with the aim of being 10
times as fast as 3G. While it isn't really surprising, this is the
type of thing the industry is famous for. They overhype a technology
way beyond what it can do, then when people realize it really isn't
that impressive, they move on to a new standard that they'll hype up
for years. While there are some big players joining up to work on
this project, expect it to take
quite a long time for anything
to actually come of it. By the time this offering reaches a
commercial launch, the requirements of users are likely to have
changed drastically. The competitive marketplace will also be very
different. So, before people go off and declare this new, completely
imaginary standard to be
the wireless broadband technology of
the future, it might make sense to wait a few years and see how far
it's really progressed.

SBC Promises Fiber Too, Triple Play
Fight Is On
SBC Promises Fiber Too, Triple Play
Fight Is On
06/22/2004 12:09 PMIt looks like the "triple play fight" is officially on. Yesterday,
Cablevision announced their plans to
give
away VoIP, basically free for a year to attract new customers to
their voice, video and data broadband bundle. BellSouth quickly
followed with
their DSL-over-TV
plans in order to offer a true triple play (rather than the hedge
plan of teaming up with a satellite TV provider). Today, SBC
announced that
they're going to invest heavily in installing fiber to
the premise in order to offer higher speeds and IP-based TV. This
follows about a month after
Verizon
made their fiber plans clear. As Broadband Reports
warns,
however, the telcos have a history of promising fiber and never
delivering, so it may pay to be skeptical until the lights on the
modem are blinking. Either way, it does look like both sides (cable
and telcos) are finally coming to terms with the new state of
competition in the marketplace. In this instance, the cable companies
definitely have the early lead. Adding VoIP to their bundle is much
easier than either building up a FTTP network or figuring out how to
do TV-over-DSL. There's a lot longer history with VoIP and many of
the bugs have been worked out. That's not true with
TV-over-broadband, which is more difficult to build in the first
place. However, looking out a few years, if the telcos can work
through the issues, they may eventually have a much stronger package,
offering higher speeds and more services. In the short-term, they've
been able to win more customers by focusing on offering much cheaper
DSL, a strategy that ignores bundling for now to try to sign up
customers at cable's expense. With most customers just focused on the
broadband, this strategy makes sense (and makes BellSouth's plan to
stop
offering unbundled DSL particularly short-sighted). What isn't
discussed very much however, is the wireless element. The telcos are
in a much better position to also bundle in both mobile phone service
and wireless broadband services that make it so you can connect
anywhere. The cable companies, for the most part, have stayed out of
that area, and such bundles could keep the telcos in the game if they
start pushing a different triple play of voice and data "anywhere",
until they can get the "quadruple play" together of voice, video and
data anywhere. No matter what, it appears the battle is definitely
on, which should mean more competitive offerings for customers.

[This is an edited version of the talk I gave last fall at the
State of Play
conference.]
I'm sort of odd-man-out in a Games and Law conference, in that my
primary area of inquiry isn't games but social software. Not only am I
not a lawyer, I don't even spend most of my time thinking about game
problems. I spend my time thinking about software that supports group
interaction across a fairly wide range of social patterns.
So, instead of working from case law out, which has been a theme here
(and here's where I insert the "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer) I'm
going to propose a thought experiment looking from the outside in.
And I want to pick up on something that Julian [Dibbell] said earlier
about game worlds: 'users are the state.' The thought experiment I
want to propose is to agree with that sentiment, and to ask "How far
can we go in that direction?"
Instead of looking for the places where game users are currently suing
or fighting one another, forcing the owners of various virtual worlds
to deal with these things one crisis at a time, I want to ask the
question "What would happen if we wanted to build a world where we
maximized the amount of user control? What would that look like?"
I'm going to make that argument in three pieces. First, I'm going to
do a little background on group structure and the tension between the
individual and the group. Then I want to contrast briefly governance
in real and virtual worlds. Finally I want to propose a thought
experiment on placing control of online spaces in the hands of the
users.
