Google - Affiliates - Update

Google - Affiliates - Update

Google - Affiliates - Update 12/19/2004 03:08 PM

"... are going to be making serious serious changes to the whole affiliate merchant via ppc...early reports indicate an "auction" based system where advertisers fight it out on who can bid, and only 1 advertiser per site as such."

iTunes Affiliates

iTunes Affiliates 09/10/2004 05:14 AM
I have to say I’m a tad underwhelmed by the iTunes Affiliate Scheme. This site got turned down for one of the following reasons :
  • The content is unrelated to iTunes
  • Your site is temporarily down or under construction.
  • A wrong or misspelled URL given in the application.
  • Your site is aesthetically unpleasing
  • Your site promotes tobacco, alcohol or excessive drinking/drug use
  • Your site contains extreme religious content
  • Your site is international (with a majority of visitors based OUTSIDE the US)
I’m pretty sure this site fails on the last one (hopefully no-one considers this site to be ‘aesthetically unpleasing’ or my writing to induce ‘excessive drug use’). This is a real bummer for those of us outside the US (yep, we don’t all live in America). If there’s one thing that really bugs me about Apple, it’s the blinkers they have when it comes to the rest of the world. It took us long enough to get the iTunes Music Store here in Europe… Anyway, despite the whole non-US thing, the scheme appears to be run by a third party organisation called the LinkShare network. Immediately this is a disappointment as I was expecting the scheme to run within the Apple website (possibly using your Apple ID or .Mac account). I wouldn’t think it’d be too difficult to get some web development people on the case at Apple. After all, Amazon and Google manage to offer nicely integrated affiliate schemes. Once an account has been created (after negotiating a horrendous form on the Apple website), you are sent a barrage of confusing e-mails eventually directing you to the LinkShare website. The e-mails encourage you to join up to Apple iTunes via LinkShare and create your links using their system. After bombing out fairly early I didn’t get the chance the sign up and create some links, so I’d be interested to hear from others who have managed this successfully (I have a feeling the process is not as easy as it should be). I was looking forward to getting some iTunes links on this site (if only to make a few bob on my own purchases), but I’m left feeling disappointed by the whole process. The current LinkShare-powered system only serves to discourage site owners from becoming affiliates — a situation obviously at odds with Apple’s intentions.

Thanks to Milly for sending word of a Google Toolbar update. New features include a Google Answers link and support for URLs that are broken apart (such as wrapped URLs in email). If you're running the toolbar you can use the experimental features setting to search Dictionary.com from the Combined Search button. Milly also has a series of Google bookmarklets, to search different parts of Google and things like the Microsoft Knowledge Base. They don't seem to work in IE5/Mac. If you're using that, you might be more interested in my own Googler or DTRT, which let you search all the Google's from the comfort of your address bar....

Bogus Diet Patch Company Gets Away By
Blaming Affiliates

Bogus Diet Patch Company Gets Away By
Blaming Affiliates
04/01/2005 10:40 PM
The FTC has apparently decided to settle with a company that was pitching bogus diet patches online. They gave them a small fine, but it's for much less than the total amount they made off the stuff. There appear to be two claims here: one was that they violated CAN SPAM, and the second was that they violated the FTC Act since the patches didn't actually do anything. However, from the sound of the settlement, it appears that the company tap danced its way out of the spamming charge by pointing out that the FTC couldn't prove they did the spamming, since they had "affiliates" do the spamming for them. It appears the FTC has realized that the company was right. Despite the fact that the company was probably pushing others to do the spamming for it, if they didn't do the actual spamming, should they be held liable for spamming? Of course, there's also the followup. If they know it was the affiliates, then why not go after those affiliates as well? That should scare off some of these spammers from signing up for affiliate programs.

Chinese Google Update

Chinese Google Update 09/13/2002 02:36 PM
An anonymous Chinese user wrote in to say that while Google is back, the cache search feature is not. This would validate the guess that the Chinese government was actually afraid of people using the cache to visit blocked websites. In other news, the Google Watch folks have their own Google proxy which not only protects you from government censorship, but also from Google's use of identifying cookie information. They have an article suggesting that China blocked Google because of the cookies, whch I find rather hard-to-believe....

Update : Google shares surge

Update : Google shares surge 08/19/2004 03:07 PM
<img src="http://ichart.yahoo.com/t?s=GOOG" align="right" alt="Live Yahoo Google Stock Feed" style='border:1px solid #90A0B0'>Google shares are currently up ~$16 per share to $100, an increase on the revised opening price ($85) of ~20%.

Forbes talked to Barry Randall, portfolio manager for the First American Technology Fund, who remarked "The surge may indicate many institutional investors sat on the sidelines for the initial offering."There were a lot of institutional investors who were spooked by not only the initial auction scenario but also the missteps along the way. I suspect many of them did regard it as a healthy business model, and now they have the ability to purchase the stock from the open market instead of the managers. I think they feel more comfortable."

Google will undoubtedly be happy with the days trading; they haven't had any disaster that some analysts had predicted. Equally, the share price seems to have settled at what for them can only be viewed as a very reasonable figure.
