NYT story on an interactive art installation that toys with the surreal, free-association results of Internet keyword searches. David Ayman Shamma of Northwestern University, and Kristian J. Hammond of Northwestern University have created "Imagination Environment," currently on display in Chicago.
[The exhibit] starts with a live television news broadcast that is displayed at the center of a wall-mounted array of nine computer monitors. A software program scans the broadcast's closed-caption stream and selects keywords that prompt Internet searches for images. Seconds after the live audio is heard, the news broadcast is surrounded by pertinent photographs and illustrations on adjacent screens, as well as some images completely unrelated.

"The words tend to be linked to a strange combination of images that are on point and strikingly bizarre," Professor Hammond said.

For instance, during a recent televised briefing by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, a reference to troops was as likely to retrieve a photograph of Girl Scouts as one of soldiers. But a mention of the secretary's title only generated a cartoon drawing of an administrative assistant.

Keyword search ads are live
By dsifry

Well, there's been a lot going on over at Technorati, and I've been so busy that blogging has been pretty light. I hope that I can blog more often as the summer continues.

Anyway, here's some fun news that I'm happy to report: Technorati has taken its first steps towards the business models that we've chosen: We've rolled out keyword search advertising on the website. You'll notice the "Sponsored Links" box on the right hand side of the results page on many terms that you do searches upon. This is done through a partnership we have with findwhat.com, and quite frankly, it is just a first step. There's a lot of improvements and changes that we want to make, and this is definitely a "crawl-before-you-walk" kind of opportunity, but it is a first step. For example, I want to have a system that makes it easier to do targeting (blog-based? topic based? authority-based?) and get better reporting. We're also really interested in your feedback - leave a comment or a link, or drop us a line at feedback@technorati.com. We are also working on implementing a lot of the great feedback we got at the developer's forum last month.

Oh yeah - if you're interested in seeing your ads on technorati.com search results today, here's how you get more information.

Lastly, big kudos to all the folks back at the office, who made this happen - you guys rock.

NY AG Buys Google Ads On Keywords Of

NY AG Buys Google Ads On Keywords Of
Company He's Investigating
04/06/2005 06:28 PM
While most US courts have determined that there's no trademark infringement in buying a search engine advertisement based on a trademarked keyword, there are still some cases going forward. So, it's a bit surprising (though, amusing) to find out that New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer was caught buying trademarked keywords promoting his campaign for governor. The keywords in question were for AIG, the big insurance conglomerate that Spitzer has been investigating for fraud. From a publicity standpoint, perhaps it makes sense. People searching on AIG may associate Spitzer's name with the company, but this is a bit trickier than someone just trying to get some publicity off of a popular keyword. Spitzer now claims it was a mistake, and the ads have been removed. Of course, what's to stop someone else from buying the same ads, and linking them to Spitzer's campaign site? In fact, at the time of this posting, it looks like some random advertiser has picked up on this story and is advertising some random anti-Google site, claiming that Eliot Spitzer and Google "overstep their boundaries." Once again, people seem to be trying to make a point through popular keywords.
