Keyword search ads are live
Keyword search ads are live
06/24/2004 11:44 AMWell, there's been a lot going on over at Technorati, and I've been so
busy that blogging has been pretty light. I hope that I can blog more
often as the summer continues.
Anyway, here's some fun news that I'm happy to report: Technorati
has taken its first steps towards the business models that we've
chosen: We've rolled out keyword search advertising on the website.
You'll notice the "Sponsored Links" box on the right hand side of the
results page on many terms that you do searches upon. This is done through a
partnership we have with findwhat.com, and quite frankly,
it is just a first step. There's a lot of improvements and changes
that we want to make, and this is definitely a
"crawl-before-you-walk" kind of opportunity, but it is a first step.
For example, I want to have a system that makes it easier to do
targeting (blog-based? topic based? authority-based?) and get better
reporting. We're also really interested in your feedback - leave a
comment or a link, or drop us a line at feedback@technorati.com. We
are also working on implementing a lot of the great feedback we got at
the developer's forum last month.
Oh yeah - if you're interested in seeing your ads on technorati.com
search results today, here's how
you get more information.
Lastly, big kudos to all the folks back at the office, who made
this happen - you guys rock.

You can now query Technorati for advanced search
terms such as tsunami and ("red
cross" or "red crescent") and it will give you all of the blog
posts in order by how long ago they were posted that include the word
"tsunami" and either "red cross" or "red crescent". You can then click
"Make this a Watchlist" and create an RSS feed so you can track all
new posts that match that query in your news reader.

New and Improved! Technorati Keyword
Search...
02/10/2004 02:44 AMTechnorati just released
to the world the completely rewritten keyword search
system we've been working on, and we're soliciting feedback!
The major improvements of this release are:
Oh, and we've made some significant speedups on getting the cosmos of
big sites, like the
New York Times,
CNN,
Google,
Yahoo, and
bOingbOing. Give 'em a whirl.
Amazon is my favorite, it is like
getting a quick glimpse into people's buying habits at any given time
of the day.
We're looking for your feedback! Some areas where
we already know we need improvement: Response time is important, and
our goal is to get to under one second search times. For now, most
keyword searches run in under 10 seconds. There are occasional
duplicate posts in the database, we're working on cleaning those out
as well. We're also getting the search XML APIs ready to go, they
aren't quite ready to launch today.
Please let us know what else we can do to improve!
The new
search is up on the Technorati site, so go and give it a try, and
by all means, let us know what you think.

China Blocks Keyword Search, Denies All
09/14/2002 10:11 PMNew Scientist: Google keywords knock Chinese surfers offline. "If you

(Thanks, S. Anand!) NYTimes: China Seems to Refine Bid to Restrict Web
Access. "Users searching for information on Falun Gong, the outlawed
spiritual movement, turned up many references through Google. But
exploring those references proved impossible, and users' Internet
browsers often ceased to operate properly once an unauthorized
reference had been clicked on." According to the New Scientist, "the
Chinese government refutes denying access to Google and has suggested
that surfers could be suffering normal network problems." "It is quite
normal with some internet sites that sometimes you can access them,
and sometimes you can't," says an official from the Chinese
government's information department. "The ministry has received no
information about Google being blocked, and we have received no
information about a block being lifted."...

Google Fed Up With Bad Keyword Choices
Google Fed Up With Bad Keyword Choices
05/10/2004 01:30 PMSearch engine optimizers charge a lot of money to companies to help
them choose better keywords to trigger their Google ads. However, it
appears Google thinks they can do a better job themselves (or at least
help those who don't bother shelling out money to an SEO firm) by
scann
ing the advertiser's website and automatically picking the best
keywords to trigger ads. This seems like a natural extension of
their contextual advertising offering - where the idea is to scan
content pages to determine what kind of advertising should show up on
that page. The difference here is they'll be scanning pages to
determine what kind of advertising should attract people to that page.
One aspect of this would apparently allow online merchants to provide
a data feed of their products, to automatically have them show up in
(hopefully relevant) searches as text ads. In some ways this is quite
similar to the technique used for paid-inclusion in other search
engines - but the ads will still be separate. As with any automation
of such things, the big question is in how well it works. Companies
aren't going to be thrilled if their advertising starts showing up on
searches that have no relevance.

Syndication: How to Easily Syndicate Your Web Content: Here's an
extremely well-done article on using JavaScript includes to syndicate
your content. Very in-depth with many code samples and diagrams.
If you are syndicating to websites that are not under your
control, you don't know that the webmaster will have the expertise to
implement a syndication strategy using XML. You might be syndicating
to a small company that used FrontPage to make the website; they
certainly can't set up a dynamic process to fetch an XML feed from
your site, cache it, and integrate the data into their
site.
I'm almost more impressed with the presentation of the article than
with the content. We need more Web content like this.

08/23/2004 06:57 AMCurious Javascript in .NET
Curious Javascript in .NET
04/26/2004 02:08 AMI've never had the opportunity nor the inclination to do anything
with .NET; at work we use open source tools for all of our web
development, and I prefer open source tools for my own personal
experiments as well. At any rate, the
javascript:__doPostBack links I've seen on .NET powered
sites such as Channel 9 and Orkut plain give me the willies.
Anyway, I decided to view source and see what
__doPostBack actually does. Here's the function:
function __doPostBack(eventTarget, eventArgument) {
var theform;
if (window.navigator.appName.toLowerCase().indexOf("microsoft") >
-1) {
theform = document._ctl0;
}
else {
theform = document.forms["_ctl0"];
}
theform.__EVENTTARGET.value = eventTarget.split("$").join(":");
theform.__EVENTARGUMENT.value = eventArgument;
theform.submit();
}
Note the use of a dubious user-agent based browser detection
method. Now what I just don't understand is why that browser detection
is there in the first place. There are numerous ways of accessing a
form by name using Javascript.
document.forms['form-name'] is part of DOM level 0, and is supported
by virtually every browser since Netscape 2.
document.form-name is a Microsoft invention. The thing
is, document.forms['form-name'] is supported by MS browsers as well. So why do a browser
detect and use the MS only method
when just using the other method with no detect would work equally as
well?
