Google Is
Adding Major Libraries to Its Database
By JOHN MARKOFF and EDWARD WYATT
Google, the operator of the world's most popular Internet search
service, plans to announce an agreement today with some of the
nation's leading research libraries and Oxford University to begin
converting their holdings into digital files that would be freely
searchable over the Web.
It may be only a step on a long road toward the long-predicted
global virtual library. But the collaboration of Google and research
institutions that also include Harvard, the University of Michigan,
Stanford and the New York Public Library is a major stride in an
ambitious Internet effort by various parties. The goal is to expand
the Web beyond its current valuable, if eclectic, body of material and
create a digital card catalog and searchable library for the world's
books, scholarly papers and special collections.

Harvard Pilot Project with Google
I just got a university-wide email regarding a pilot project that
Harvard is starting with Google. It looks like Google will also be
joining with other universities in this project, which will begin the
work of digitizing, and in the case of public domain works providing
public access to, the contents of the Harvard library
system.
Sounds good. Now if only we can figure out a way
to get more of the books, particularly those which are out of print,
into the public domain.

://www.resource.gov.uk/action/learnacc/00access_03.aspIn a United Kingdom plan to reduce access barriers in museums,
archives and libraries, an organization called Resource: The Council
for Museums, Archives and Libraries has created a database of 200
trainers, auditors and consultants specializing in disability issues.
The database offers support and advice on all disability issues.
Marcus Weisen, Resources Disability Officer, says: "In the past
databases of disability trainers, auditors and consultants in the
cultural sector were merely address lists and they were not available
on the Web. With this new system, we can allow users to browse
categorized listings to find the best match for their needs." The
disability database is available on the Resource Web site at:

Microsoft delays major developer tools
and database releases
03/22/2005 03:33 PMMicrosoft has announced that its next-generation software development
suite, Visual Studio 2005, and its long-awaited new database system,
SQL Server 2005, will now appear in 'the second half' of 2005. This is
seen as a further slippage for the long-awaited products. (The Yukon
version of SQL Server was once anticipated as underpinning the
database-oriented filesystem of Longhorn. Similarly, the 'Orcas'
version of Visual Studio was originally intended to provide tool
support for the Longhorn Windows OS.)
Major products do not usual ship in July or August - so if they have
not arrived by June then September becomes the first available
timepoint. Given the size and history of these products, however,
'anytime before the end of 2005' might be a wiser prediction.
Microsoft has announced revised US pricing for Visual Studio 2005, and
tweaked subscription terms for its Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN)
subscriptions, the channel by which most developers obtain Visual
Studio. With the estimated prices being revised downwards, Microsoft
will also offer MSDN subs with Visual Studio Professional Edition
products at special rates. This is 'to afford small businesses the
same subscription benefits as large enterprises,' it states.

The New York library is allowing Google to include a small
portion of its books no longer covered by copyright while Harvard is
confining its participation to 40,000 volumes so it can gauge how well
the process works. Oxford wants Google to scan all its books
originally published before 1901.

Brewster Kahle Asks Google For Their
Database
08/11/2004 01:37 PMThe San Jose Mercury News is running a somewhat random article about
Brew
ster Kahle's Internet Archive. While he's been profiled many
times before, the one interesting tidbit to slip out this time is that
Kahle has asked Google to donate their database to help the archive.
He's asking for a six-month old version of the database, to avoid
competitive problems. The Internet Archive only publishes material
6-months old or older at this point anyway. Kahle is trying to appeal
to Google's claim to want to make the world a better place, but you
have to wonder if Google is holding back, in part, due to Kahle's
involvement with open source search engine, Nutch. In somewhat
related news, the Inquirer has a story about how the Internet Archive
needed to get a
special exception to the
DMCA in order to keep copying certain software files to preserve
the software from ending up on obsolete storage systems. I thought
this exception was granted a while back, but maybe they're just
starting to complain now about the fact they need to go back every 3
years to ask for permission again to save digital items for the sake
of history.
