Rio Japan Wireless Speakers

Rio Japan Wireless Speakers

Rio Japan Wireless Speakers 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

rio_wireless_sx.jpg imageI think we can all get with wireless connections to our speakers from our portable music players—it's mostly pointless, but potentially handy, what with the ability to switch songs around from your pocket (I tried this for a while with an iPod and an iTrip, until I found myself virtually tethered, always turning to get the best transmission, which sort of defeats the purpose). So these new speakers from Rio Japan are a fine idea, even if the dongle that is designed to plug into the Rio Carbon is almost as big as the player itself. The reflector on the top of the speakers, with the Rio logo silk-screened onto it to float in the air... that's a bit much, really. But wireless is good—this $400 speaker set will surely make some Rio fan very happy.

And speaking of WIRELESS JAPAN 2004, the high-technology product show that is going on in (surprise!) Japan, Gizmodo buddy Gonzague-Alexandre Gay took a stroll through the conference and came back with some fantastic pictures (and commentary, too, if you can read French). There's just too much to describe, really, with swoopy, transparent cellphone concepts, new PDAs, and tiny LCD displays galore.

Highlights from day 2 include a compact wireless optical connection module (capable of 1.25Gbps throughput, no less), Panasonic's sick and twisted vision of the future of cellular phones, and the new "MOPASS card," combining removable media and IC card into one. Also covered in the article is NEC's "internet for people who drive too fast," a high speed IP handover system allowing for vehicles moving at up to 300km per hour to sustain 100kbps transfer rates, Renesas' "SH-Mobile3" 3D accelerator for phones, and the Mobile Content Awards 2004. Apple has opened a version of its online store for wireless Internet users in Japan. The service is available to owners of most handsets sold by NTT DoCoMo Inc. and KDDI Corp.'s Au unit, which together account for about 82 percent of all wireless Internet subscribers in Japan. The version for Au's EZWeb service launched on March 28 and the NTT DoCoMo I-mode site went live on April 1, Apple said.

This is sweet: a Japanese amp system that lives in a flowerpot and uses the foliage above to amplify the sound.
Called the "Flower Speaker Amplifiers", the gadget made by Let's Corp is hidden in a vase or a potted plant and sends music at just the right frequency to vibrate up the stems and then be converted into audible sound by the plant as a whole.

Here's one for my foodie French-speaking soon-to-be-or-already-are-in-France friends: Les 100 meilleurs bistrots à moins de 30 €. Note: The link points to ones in Paris, see the sidebar for those outside the Île-de-France. For the non-French speakers out there, it's a list of "The 100 best 30 € and under bistros." I've been to two on the Paris list so far this visit: L'Ami Marcel (which was mentioned in the April 2005 Gourmet article "The Bistro Boom"); and L'Epi Dupin. Both were very good and I'd recommend either for a lovely meal. And see, if I were less lazy, I would have written posts about eating there! As penance, if my dinning companions post about the meals, I promise to make the appropriate links.

Can You Turn Your Head Into Speakers?

Can You Turn Your Head Into Speakers? 11/03/2003 04:24 AM
Roland Piquepaille writes "This is not a joke. You can do it today, according to this article from Fortune, "Metal Heads." It states that a small company based in Iowa has developed products made with a "smart" metal that can turn your walls or your head into speakers. "Last August, Etrema -- an innovative technology firm nestled in the cornfields of Ames, Iowa -- started selling those chrome discs for $1,500 a pair. Called Whispering Windows, they can turn any wall, window, or drab conference table into a speaker." The author tried the technology, and even if she needed a full bottle of Tylenol after usage, said "it's not every day that your head serves as a piece of stereo equipment." This overview on my blog tells you more about this "magic" metal, the Terfenol, which is a combination of terbium and dysprosium. The article also says that we can soon expect pirated versions of Terfenol coming from China. "

IMMINI-FRONT-WIPOD-5in.jpg image

Kenneth Armstrong writes: Today Altec Lansing announced their bizarrely named iMmini (no that's not a typo; I checked 8 times) speakers for iPod mini. It is similar in styling to their InMotion Speakers for iPod, but about 40% smaller.

"We're delighted that Altec Lansing is bringing out another breakthrough accessory with the iMmini to provide a great sound system designed specifically for the incredibly successful iPod mini." said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Hardware Product Marketing. (The press release doesn't mention what industrial plastics were insufflated before approving the name.)

The iMmini is priced at $129.95 and will be available "late summer" at the Apple online store as well as at their brick-and-mortar stores.

AHS602.jpg imageAltec Lansing has a new set of gaming headphones, the AHS602s, with now-ubiquitous boom mike and "SRS 3-D Audio," which is not to be mistaken with actual surround sound but instead more than likely is yet another slightly-out-of-phase stereo technology (which works well enough, but I'm just saying). For a hundred bills the 40mm neodymium drivers - some call them speakers - better sound pretty swell. You can get a nice pair of closed-ear headphones for half that, then throw in any random boom bike for $5.

Speaker specs are pretty nice: 1-inch tweeters, two 3-inch mid-range drivers, a 4-inch subwoofer and a 4-inch passive radiator (?) and it runs on eight D batteries, just like the old timey boomboxes of yore.

Altec Lansing has been putting out some nice product lately, so there's no reason to think this will be a clunker. Priced at about $249, seems like a nice way to get portable sound out of your iPod.

LG-VX8100 w/ Bluetooth on Verizon 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

LG-VX8100.jpg imageDocuments filed with the FCC on Tuesday reveal a new LG Bluetooth clamshell-style camera phone coming to Verizon's network. Feature details on the VX-8100 are somewhat scarce, but it's definitely tri-mode, dual-band CDMA and presumably the successor to LG's (still not out) VX-8000. It's probably safe to assume a greater-than-1-megapixel camera given the 8000's 1-megapixeler (It's safe to assume that's not a word). It's pretty much impossible to speculate about a release date or street price, but if I had to guess I'd put it in the third or fourth quarter of 2005. We'll see. (Thanks, Bobby!)

JVC SX-WD10, SX-DW505 Wood Speakers 04/06/2005 11:31 AM

jvc_wood.gif imageJVC knows how to make fancy looking speakers. The new "SX-WD10" and "SX-DW505" do that, too. There must be something about wood and speakers that people like. But what's this? "Copper Clad Aluminum?" It seems to me speaker manufacturers just sit around and come up with the most exotic materials they possibly can, and claim it produces higher quality sound.

Lansing PL Is Shifting!

Lansing PL Is Shifting! 04/10/2005 12:47 AM

Another one of my member libraries has been shifting like crazy lately, but I just recently realized how far. The Lansing Public Library started with blogs, four of them to be exact, which of course gives them RSS feeds. (Well, when Blogger is working these days, it does, but that’s not LPL’s fault.)

Then Kelli Staley emailed me that they’ve been doing the instant messaging thing, too. Since October. Aaron, they’re drinking your Kool-Aid! I especially like that they’re using icons on their pages to indicate presence (online versus offline), which is IM’s big strength. Kelli wrote, “Our library is on 2 levels, so we have separate screen names for different age groups. AskLPLAdult, AskLPLTeen, AskLPLYouth (we're on Yahoo & AOL).” She went on to note that a few weeks ago, they received IMs from students in Florida and Ohio. Those two requests are from students who couldn’t IM their local library. Can your students IM yours?

But LPL didn’t stop there, as the next message from Kelli illustrated:

Lansing Public Library has partnered with the office of Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka to offer a new service called E-Pay. The E-Pay program was launched by Topinka’s office in 2000 under a state master services agreement that is available for all counties and local governments in Illinois to participate in. ‘We are pleased to help move the library into the 21st century.’ Assistant Library Director Patricia Higgins said, ‘Our E-Pay electronic payment service will provide greater convenience to the community and increase the services offered by the library.’

The Library’s E-Pay service has started with fee payment and donations to Friends of Lansing Public Library. E-Pay will allow you to make your payments over the Internet with cardholders of MasterCard, American Express and Discover card brands. A transaction, or user fee, is added to the payment amount for the convenience of the Internet service. The state and local participants who use this program do not receive any revenue from the convenience fee.
It’s not PayPal, but it’s a heckuva step in the right direction. Reciprocal borrowers with outstanding fines and fees are even eligible to use this service - how cool is that? Keep up the great work, LPL!
