Solar Powered Wallpaper 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

Treehugger points out an innovative student project from NYU that adds electroluminescent materials to wallpaper, hiding in the background as traditional design elements when there is ample ambient light, then releasing stored sunlight through glowing elements as the lights dim. A prototype will be shown at the Winter Show at the Tisch School of the Arts this Sunday and Monday.

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/images/solar_toothbrush.jpg" alt="solar_toothbrush.jpg image" width="119" height="200" class="right border"/>For those with pasty white gums, this Soladey solar-powered toothbrush will provide a loving bronzing that even George Hamilton's dentist will love. Or it will convert light into negative ions to attract positive ions from acidic dental plaque or something—it's Japanese; I hold myself to no accuracy. It's part of a selection of green hygiene products on Treehugger, including a prototype ceramic-bladed razor that wouldn't have needed sharping or replacement blades, but was rubbed out when it was discovered to allow cars to travel 200 miles on just a single gallon of gas.

Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker

Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

rainbowmaker.jpg imageThis cute little device suction-cups to your window, soaking in sunlight and shooting it out through a hanging prism, giving you (presumably) larger or more vibrant rainbows than you'd get with just sunlight alone. It's completely useless and obviously a mechanism of the Gay Conspiracy, but I want one pretty badly. Unfortunately, besides this bit on SorobanGeeks, I have no idea where one would purchase such a trifle. (And yes, it's supposed to hang with the prisms down, but I didn't want to cram it in).

You won't be making phone calls with our star's light alone, but on a sunny day the Sunpower batteries can manage to add about 15 minutes of talk time to your battery for every hour they spend charging. Depending on how actively you use your phone (and what part of Arizona you live in), your phone might not have to hit the charger at all. Prices run from about $40 to $60 per battery via their website.

lumiwall_2.jpg imageSharp has unveiled a new street lamp in Japan called the "Lumiwall" that uses solar power and LED arrays to remain entirely off of the electrical grid. Although each unit costs in the neighborhood of $4,500, the idea is that the initial cost outlay will be offset by the power savings and lessened environmental impact.

Silicon.com reports on BAE Systems's radio frequency blocking wallpaper: It's 50 to 100 microns thick and can adhere to most surfaces. It's a mesh of copper and a polymer created in a manner similar to how circuit boards are laid down. There's no timeline for commercial availability. Some versions can be switched on and off; others are permanent. [link via TechDirt]...

On Pets TV and working wallpaper... 04/29/2004 09:07 AM

From behind the mediaguardian registration wall comes this wonderful little weird nugget of BBC-ness:

Pet TV is a service digital viewers can access by pressing the interactive red button on their remotes, for a week-long run from Saturday May 1. It is being billed by the BBC as an attempt to find out what sort of TV programmes, sounds and images animals respond to. The interactive TV service will consist of a looped series of images and sounds, including clips of snooker balls rolling across the green baize, frisbees flying through the air, cat toys and cartoon characters such as Top Cat. The service will also offer clips from more traditional TV fare, such as EastEnders, Neighbours, The Muppet Show and Animal Hospital. Pet TV can be tried out on dogs, cats, birds and even fish, according to the BBC.

Not quite sure what I think of in terms of how entertaining pets might find it, but it could be ideal ambient TV wallpaper. I'm thinking of having it on all the time...

New Scientist reports on Frequency Selective Surface sheeting, essentially wireless security wallpaper that can contain Wi-Fi signals while allowing cell phone calls to pass through. Funded by UK telecom regulator Ofcom, BAE Systems (formerly British Aerospace) based the technology on material used to camouflage military radars. The company is now working on a transparent version to cover windows. Link
