Anti-Spam Legislation Makes Spam More

04/29/2004 01:28 PM
Aren't unintended consequences wonderful? Now that anti-spam legislation is becoming popular, one result is that spammers aren't wasting time with just spamming mortgage offers and ways to buy Viagra. Instead, now that they realize they're definitely on illegal ground, they're moving more towards malicious attack spam, including phishing attacks and trojan horse attacks. In other words, if they're going to break the law with spam, they figure they might as well go all out.

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
Danny O'Brien has written up one of the first summits between spammers and spam-fighters for the Guardian. It's a great piece.
Surprisingly, no such shootings occur. It's oddly intimate, watching the spammers and the anti-spammers mill around each other like this. It feels like a temporary ceasefire in a vicious war that to most of us seems to be a stalemate...

Over the past year, though, a series of meetings arranged by a trusted figure in the American anti-spam community, Anne Mitchell, have been slowly bringing the two sides together. These mini-conferences, held under the banner of the Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy, have mostly been between the highest-ranking ISPs - MSN, AOL - and commercial email marketers of the most squeaky clean kind. Initially in secret, these days the meetings are more public.

Every time someone introduces a new anti-spam technique, some wily spammer devises a workaround. This myriad of actions and reactions is going to tie our e-mail system in knots. The only real solution to unsolicited mail is to eliminate the problem altogether by stopping spam at the source. To this end, the folks at ImagineNation have proposed an eMstamp solution and have set out to publicly answer the many questions that the proposal has raised. [PRWEB Jun 22, 2004]

Blacklisted Comment Spammers Attack
Legitimate Domain

Blacklisted Comment Spammers Attack
Legitimate Domain
07/07/2004 02:28 PM
UPDATED It appears that the comment spammers may be polluting new postings with legitimate domains -- including this one -- in order to cause trouble for people who are running programs to cut down on comment spam. In this case, they put weblog.siliconvalley.com and mercurynews.com URLs into spams containing their porn and casino links (or whatever it was the anti-spam program had already flagged), and the comment blacklist software picked our URLs up and offered to ban them. We missed this, and the result was that I couldn't post comments here briefly, and some of my old comments got erased in the meantime. I'm betting this is going on widely -- and that the spammers are hoping to cause such disruption with MT Blacklist, which we're using, and other such programs as to force us to stop using them. I'd rather shut the comments down entirely than see these slimeballs get away with this. For now we're watching our banned-domain list more carefully. (We just discovered that washingtonpost.com, cnn.com and abcnews.go.com, among other news sites, also made it into our master list. They'll work now.) Let me know in an e-mail if your comment is rejected from a legitimate domain, and I'll ask our tech folks to take a look. The bad guys are indifferent to the damage they cause. Sorry it may be affecting some of you.

How to get falsely blacklisted for
running an open spam relay

How to get falsely blacklisted for
running an open spam relay
07/06/2004 08:08 AM
It's easy. Just sign up with an ISP that issues dynamic IP addresses. That's how I got on several email "black hole" lists meant to stop spam, even though I don't spam and my system has never operated as an open relay. If you use an ISP that doesn't give you a stable IP address, you may be on one or more spam blacklists, too -- and you may not necessarily know it. Then comes the fun part: Getting off those lists can be a lot harder than getting on them.

Microsoft co-operates with email rivals 06/28/2004 10:07 AM
IN A RARE mood of co-operation, software giant Microsoft has blended its e-mail sender authentication scheme with a competing standard. The aim is to get a standard that can defeat spam by forcing emails to reveal the IP address they are sent from. If adopted by the Engineering Task Force (IETF) Sender ID would serve as an e-mail authentication system that verifies the message actually originated with the purported address.

For some time now reports have been coming in that Microsoft was going to get serious about sender ID checks for email. The belief is that this will put a big damper on the continuing spam problem. Well, it appears that they have started to take some initiative by asking Internet service providers (ISPs) to publish Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records. This will identify their e-mail servers in the domain name system. If the whole…

I was mistaken last night in thinking that the Microsoft 2005 Express product line which is made up of releases of Visual Basic 2005, Visual C#, Visual C++, Visual J#, Visual Web Dev, SQl Server. would be available later, they have been released as Beta's and can be downloaded today. I am not sure how I missed that but the downloads and programs are being provided for Free during BETA. They are supposedly going to be very inexpensive when officaly released. There are even several Microsoft blogs that are being hosted by the Express team to give more insight.

For those of you that missed my earlier comments. The express versions of these products are aimed at the beginner programmer or what Microsoft has dubbed the nonprofessional. In my opinion this is a very very smart move by Microsoft and may even encourage people like me who have never written a single line of code to buy some books and give it a roll.

I am really excited about SQL Server 2005 Express as that is a product I have always wanted to mess around with. Scobleizer has a article that you all must read. He has a segment on their about Microsoft Bug reports also that I am going to investigate separately. A lot to dig thru today. [Scoble] [Microsoft Express]
