Micro-content dinner in London - Sept.

Micro-content dinner in London - Sept.
13th
09/07/2004 06:41 AM

So after some research into Fish & Chips places - we've chosen the Sea Shell on Lisson Grove as the lcoation of our micro-content dinner in London. It's in Marylebone. Map.

There's a private room downstairs - which will hold 40 people.

The topics under discussion will include:

    - Open-Media.org
    - FOAFnet.org
    - OpenEvents.org
    - OpenReviews.org

and other potential efforts around new kinds of micro-content. I've been working hard to help promulgate these new standards and would appreciate some help!

They'll be blokes and lassies from all walks of life, including VCs, Beebsters, Ecademicians, Open University types, TV producers, bloodey artists and even flaming queers.

Should make for a nice mix.

And everyone gets to meet Lisa, Lucy and the star of the whole show - MIMI. Sig n-up on Wiki.

Open maps of London event: April 14,
London

Open maps of London event: April 14,
London
04/04/2005 06:24 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Open Knowledge Forums are a series of lectures and panel discussions about the ways that "open knowledge" can benefit the public interest. The next one is a week away, in London, and it's about a plan to produce a set of public domain maps of London (London's maps were produced at tax-payer expense, but can't be freely used; rather, you have to pay the ordinance survey thousands of pounds for the privilege; by contrast, US government maps are free and plentiful, and form the basis for thousands and thousand of competing mapping efforts, from Michelin guides to Google Maps).

There are a number of interesting proposals for this, including deploying an army of GPS-wielding geohackers, and buying up Russian satellite photos of London. Check out this squib from last January's NTK:

London's geowanking fraternity have come up with an intriguing proposition. With a grand's worth of Russian 1-meter resolution satellite pics, they believe they can stitch together an entirely free, redistributable vector database of the capital, freed from the shackles of the Ordnance Survey's restrictive copyrights, and thus open to all manner of GPL-style repurposing.
Here are the details:
* When: Thurs April 14th 2005, 7-9pm

* Where: Stanhope Centre, Marble Arch, London. [WWW]Directions

* Who can attend: public. Registration is optional but useful so please notify us if you can via okforums-info@okfn.org.

* Speakers: Steve Coast of openstreetmap.org; Roger Longhorn (geodata policy expert); Giles Lane of urbantapestries.net; Jo Walsh of mappinghacks.com

First Day of Junior High

First Day of Junior High 09/01/2004 11:27 AM

I pulled another all nighter, but I couldn't go to sleep this morning because today is a special day for my son.He just left on a bus to go to his junior highschool (6th grade, wow...almost a man).  It was his first ride on regular bus and alone at that.  This morning he barely ate breakfast because he was excited as well as nervous.  I thought I should just pretend today wasn't special so I was in bed when he left our house.  I didn't last more than a few minutes.  I grabbed my camera and ran out after him.

My son riding samTrans to junior high

Since I haven't posted much pictures lately, how about a couple more?

Happy to be buried alive!

Above was taken just a stone throw from our campsite at Lake Tahoe.  Camping and hanging out at the beach at the same time is the best kind of camping.

Neighborhood racoon after tasting our grapes

I was working at night when I heard a loud noise outside.  When I looked out, I saw this racoon going through our small patch of grapevines.  It sat on the wooden support and ate all the grapes, one by one, while I was staring at it.  Racoons must have special kind of nerves.  Above shot was taken when it got up to leave.  So long and thanks for all the grapes, it seemed to be saying.

Next year, I know what it will be saying, Hmm.  These grapes taste different from last year.  How do I know?  Because I'll be marking my grapes the same way as dogs do with fire hydrants.  Hah!

Junior Jobs

Junior Jobs 09/02/2004 12:19 PM

(No, this isn't a duplicate of the previous story — different sort of Jobs).

The KDE project has come up with a neat way to get new developers interested in contributing to KDE: Junior Jobs. The problem with starting to contribute to a big project like KDE is that the code is so large and confusing, a new developer won't know how or where to begin

So the KDE developers are marking certain 'easy' feature requests as 'Junior Jobs', and including some hints, so that those problems could be picked up by a developer who's never written any code for the project.

As Christian puts it: "I started to mark some bugs as JJ some months ago. Now I already received three high-quality patches from two different people (Thanks Sergio and Dermot!) for those reports. That's much more than I expected."

With some success under their belts, it's likely that a Junior Jobs programmer will go on to contribute more to the project. Neat idea.

iPod Junior

iPod Junior 01/05/2004 09:49 AM
One of the most enduring Apple-related rumours over the holiday season was that of a mini iPod. Smaller in capacity and size than the standard iPod and available in a range of colours, it would cost less than 100. This makes perfect sense to me, the iPod has all but cleaned up, but with an entry level price of 250, it's still a bit pricey for a lot of people (though this hasn't stopped them selling shed-loads of them over Christmas). Slashdot | Rumors of Mini iPods ThinkSecret | iPod Jr. Rumors Become More Substantial Meanwhile, over at the Guardian, Stephen Moss has started the backlash :
What's wrong with a Discman or a Walkperson? It's just a gadget that appeals to men who want access to everything - all the indie schmindie stuff they think they should listen to, a rock critic's wishlist of songs. They think it offers limitless potential, but our lives need editing, or it ends up like digital TV - hundreds of channels and nothing to watch.
