The truth about the NetWare client for Linux

The truth about the NetWare client for

The truth about the NetWare client for
Linux
12/19/2004 02:57 PM

The bottom line is that there will be a true NetWare client for Linux (but it will be called the "Novell" client for Linux) early next year. This will be the functional equivalent of the standard "Client32" implementation for Windows desktops.

Review: Linux Client Migration Cookbook

Review: Linux Client Migration Cookbook 02/01/2005 08:49 PM
Even the most hapless management automatons are aware of the licensing and maintenance costs associated with perpetuating a Windows workplace. As security concerns escalate and the reliability of Windows diminishes, the appeal of desktop Linux intensifies. Ready or not, businesses must heed the migratory instinct, or risk getting left behind. The Linux Client Migration Cookbook, an IBM Redbook written by a group of seasoned IT specialists and freely downloadable from IBM's Web site, is a balanced and informative guide to practical migration.

Linux Client Sweeps Europe After Delays

Linux Client Sweeps Europe After Delays 08/12/2004 08:39 PM
After delays caused by potential patent and licensing issues, several European nations are moving ahead with Linux as a client operating system.

Erwin Gillich, head of Vienna's IT department, released reports stating that Vienna will have the option to migrate from Windows to Linux in a pilot program set to be reviewed in 2006. The announcement states that 8,000 desktop workstations (half the city's overall workstations) will have the option to switch under the new pilot program.

Christian Ude, Munich's mayor, has also announced that the city will move 14,000 notebook and workstations to Linux. Dispite potential patent issues that are as yet unresolved in the European Parliament and the European Council of Ministers, Munich is moving ahead with it's request of proposals Novell and IBM.

Microsoft's response to what it sees as a definite threat to it's hold on government markets has offered favorable deals to other German city governments to intice them not to switch to Linux.

On scientific truth and Christian
truth...
07/16/2004 06:40 AM

In the middle of an article about the way that the religious right have interfered with scientific work in the US, I find a troubling paragraph:

At a time when biology is poised to undergo a fundamental revolution, the US government, arguably the most potent government in the history of the world, is rife with White House appointees who believe that scientific truth and Christian truth cannot be synonymous, and may well be in opposition.

I ask myself - do I believe that scientific truth and Christian truth can be synonymous? My answer - no. I ask myself - do I believe that they may well be in opposition? My answer - yes. The only difference between me and the people from the religious right then, is that we disagree with which 'truth' is the more reliable. I stick on the side of the people who test their conclusions and refine their belief systems with reference to evidence - they stick to the side of the people who believe that a magic being sets bushes on fire and turns women into salt.

So the scary bit for me is not that the nutters in power believe that the two are incompatible, but that the assumption is that for reasonable, normal, run-of-the-mill scientists all across America that it's normal to be able to reconcile meteorology with the concept of rains of blood and biology with people who bring people back from the dead...

NetWare gets a new name - again

NetWare gets a new name - again 04/09/2004 04:02 PM
As you probably know by now, and as reported in Network World last week, the current version of the network operating system, 6.5, will be the last to go to market as "NetWare." Beginning later this year, with the rushed entry into the marketplace of what we had been calling NetWare 7, the product will go forward as Open Enterprise Server.

Wolfgang Schreiber has been a part of Novell's Worldwide Developer Support in Germany for many years. He's helped many a developer understand how best to tackle a programming problem using Novell technologies. But what he's really known for are the many utilities he's written (on his own time) over the years that make a NetWare network manager's - and a user's - job much easier. He's provided the "missing utilities," as they're called - the things you wish Novell had included, but didn't. You may have some of these utilities on your network and weren't aware that they were not originally supplied by Novell. Among the more popular and useful ones are:

NetWare: The writing's on the wall

NetWare: The writing's on the wall 08/07/2004 05:06 AM
I came across an interesting article in Network World's sister publication, InfoWorld, last month that looked at the future of NetWare (see link below). It didn't offer anything new from executives at Novell, quoting Novell CTO Alan Nugent to the effect that Novell will continue to support NetWare customers into the future. He and others have told me the same thing at various times. And, while it is an important commitment that Novell won't abandon customers the way Banyan did when it dropped the Vines networking software, it really means that Novell is not going to be improving or extending NetWare.

One of the new features of NetWare 6.5, and which is also part of Nterprise Linux Services and slated to be in Open Enterprise Server, is Virtual Office. Many of the elements of Virtual Office, such as iFolder, iPrint, eGuide and more, aren't new in themselves but the "office" metaphor as well as the user interface is new. All that makes working with these interesting and useful technologies easier for your non-techie users (and isn't that most of them?).

A good read for NetWare 6.5 users

A good read for NetWare 6.5 users 01/17/2004 10:56 PM
Books about NetWare have been hard to come by for a number of years now. While there's always at least one "CNE Guide" for each version of the network operating system, getting a good reference - the kind you use to look up stuff, rather than one you read through before taking a test - has been difficult. But finally, there's a guide for NetWare 6.5.

Last month, I told you about the "NetWare 6.5 Administrator's Guide" by Jeffrey Harris, published by Novell Press (see link below). It's a good book and one that any NetWare 6.5 administrator should have. All the feedback I've received on the book has been favorable. At the time, though, I complained about the dearth of books about NetWare. Wonder of wonders, Novell Press released a second tome in January - the "CNA Study Guide for NetWare 6" (by David James Clark IV).

Talking about upgrades, forced upgrades, old versions of network software and why we still run them is a frequent topic of this and the Windows Networking newsletter, which I also write for Network World. The three major reasons for keeping the old network operating systems from going are money, application support, and comfort level.
