Last issue's mention of Active Directory, Active Directory/Application Mode (ADAM) and Microsoft Identity Information Server (MIIS) reminded me that I'd been meaning to draw your attention to some interesting results of a survey Microsoft conducted late last spring. The results were analyzed by the Meta Group and recently published by the analysts firm.

"My wife tells me I'm not the brightest bulb in the marquee for going to open source conferences as the Microsoft guy," said Jason Matusow, shared source initiative manager at Microsoft Corp. "Linux today is primarily growing because of the (support) of very large corporations," he said, citing not only pure-play Linux companies like Red Hat, but also the likes of IBM and Hewlett-Packard. One of the only things that three software professionals could agree on at a recent gathering in Toronto was that open source and proprietary software will have to learn to coexist.

Late last month I reviewed the results of a survey of some attendees at NetPro's Directory Experts Conference (DEC) in Reston, Va., which kicked off the series of newsletters about NT 4, upgrades and moving to a different operating system. I've now gotten the results of a similar survey that NetPro took of attendees at its European DEC in Amsterdam at the end of April. First, a comparison of results and then some comments on what it all means.

If you're still planning your seminar, conference and trade show calendar for the year, be sure to keep in mind NetPro's Directory Experts' Conference coming up in March (in Washington, D.C.) and April (in Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Both shows focus on Active Directory and its place in the enterprise. This year's theme is "Interoperability & Integration: Connecting Your IT Infrastructure with Active Directory."

NetPro's annual Directory Experts Conference (DEC) was held in Vancouver last March. At this year's event, as in years past, 101 attendees were surveyed about various things having to do with their Windows and Active Directory installations. We looked at some of the results in the last issue, but today, there's one question I want to focus on.

I often hear about the reluctance people have to installing Active Directory or to extend it in any way. In particular, people seem to have a real reluctance to expand the Active Directory schema. When I wrote about this problem recently (see link below), Dee Dee LaBruyere, Protocom Development Systems' perky marketing manager (Americas), dashed off a note that confirmed what others had been telling me, but which also offered a potential solution.

The feature will provide synchronization of data from AD to ADAM and keep the ADAM data consistent with the source AD data. Application administrators and developers can use a configuration file and a scriptable command line interface to specify a filtered and scoped subset of data to be pulled from AD to ADAM. There will be no data written back to AD and the objects and values in ADAM are not “transformed” in any way. Object or attribute based evaluation rules cannot be implemented and all values from the source AD are authoritative so while the target ADAM app may extend the data, any shared data will be overwritten with AD data values.

Back in the day (back before there was broadband, son), telecommuting meant connecting from home to the office by dialing in over a modem to one of possibly, a bank of modems in the telecomm room at your workplace. Typically, this was accomplished at bit rates of 1200 or 2400 baud. As more and more people attempted to dial-in to the network and as directory-based authentication began to be seen in small and midsize businesses, a new protocol and standard was developed: the Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service.

Unite your Linux and Active Directory
authentication

Unite your Linux and Active Directory
authentication
12/19/2004 03:46 PM
Authentication is easily one of the most critical services provided by your network infrastructure. It is the gatekeeper for every resource on your network. Workstations, applications, printers, and files would all be open to the world without a system of ensuring that only those people who need any given resource can gain access to it. Once you have accepted the fact that you need authentication, you must decide whether to stay with one network operating system in the interest of a completely homogenous network, or accept a "best of breed" system that will better fulfill your needs, even though it will complicate your environment. If you choose the second option, often times you are left with a management nightmare, where you have two, three, or even more authentication engines to maintain across your network operating systems.
