November, representing a 19 percent increase over one year ago and a
62 percent increase over November 2002 spending.
According to an eSpending Report released by Goldman Sachs, & Co.,
Harris Interactive and Nielson/NetRatings, consumers spent the most on
apprarel/clothing at $1.5 billion, followed by toys/video games
(hardware and software) at $1 billion. The video/DVD category followed
with $882 million and the books and music category rounded out the top
five with $621 million and $481 million, respectively.
Categories recording the highest growth in holiday dollars for
November 2004 included toys/video games (hardware and software) with a
43 percent increase, videos/DVDs with a 39 percent increase and the
music category with a 32 per cent increase.
The eSpending Report is based on weekly surveys of more than 1,000
U.S. adult respondents and does not include money spent on travel
purchases. In a separate report, Nielson/NetRatings said online
consumers spent $919 million on travel in November 2004, an increase
of 11 percent from a year earlier. Visits to online travel websites
represented 46 per cent of all active Web surfing.

even more online sales this year than last year on the day after
Thanksgiving, so it's
no surprise to hear that's exactly what
happened. In the meantime, though, another study shows that many
shoppers are afraid of scams and spam associated with buying online -
and are much more willing to buy from trusted online vendors than
smaller unknown vendors.

Lots Of Online Holiday Shopping... At
Work
12/24/2003 02:35 PMThere have been a ton of studies showing that lots of people did their
holiday shopping online this year. However, the latest study has one
other interesting factoid:
the peak
times for online shopping were during lunch times. In other
words, people did their holiday online shopping at work during their
lunch hour. Advertisers are beginning to notice this trend as well,
and have been looking to buy targeted ads during the lunch time
traffic rush. The article also mentions that some web filtering
technologies for the workplace are now starting to wise up to the fact
that some personal surfing from the office isn't such a bad idea, and
will let employers "open up" access to shopping sites for some period
of the day to keep them at their desk, rather than having them need to
run out and do their shopping.

w.pewinternet.org/reports/toc.asp?Report=122The
recording industry campaign against those who download and swap music
online has made an impact on several major fronts, but the number of
Americans downloading music and sharing files online has increased,
according to the most recent survey of the
Pew Internet & American Life
Project. The Project’s national phone survey of 1,371 adult
Internet users conducted between February 3 and March 1, 2004 shows
that 14% of online Americans say that at one time in their online
lives they downloaded music files, but now they no longer do any
downloading. That represents more than 17 million people. However, the
number of people who say they download music files increased from an
estimated 18 million to 23 million since the Project’s
November-December 2003 survey. This increase is likely due to the
combined effects of many people adopting new, paid download services
and, in some cases, switching to lower-profile peer-to-peer file
sharing applications.
