Karl and The Register on Blogging and
Bloggers
11/14/2003 07:34 PM

As usual, Karl is dishing out more than word soup. He hits on the reality of blogging in a post that's partly a response to Dave Winer and Kasia (as cited in The Register) and that contains such gems as: Bloggers are people who like to hear themselves talk (I'm included), filled with an inaccurate sense of importance (probably included here too), contributing to little more than white noise in a sea of screaming brains, wired together with fiber and...

Chasing Karl

Chasing Karl 10/30/2003 01:42 PM
Wonderful system of government. Fake democracy, fake elections, fake political system surrounded by humbug and greedy lawyers. This allows business to get on with its tasks, buying candidates, a bribe here, a bribe there. An interview with Karl Marx.

Karl Marx On Religion

Karl Marx On Religion 03/19/2003 10:25 PM
Perhaps Karl Marx's best known quotation is his description of religion as "the opiate of the masses." This quote is often misrepresented by those ideologically opposed to Marx as though Marx were advocating immediate and total obliteration of all religions. On the contrary, Marx viewed religion as the sole solace, often, of the oppressed proletarian classes. He would not have dreamed of tearing this away, their only consolation in life. Lutheranism was the prescribed Prussian state religion, and career advancement for non-Lutherans and especially Jews was difficult to impossible. But for Marx, religion in general was merely a symptom of a much larger issue -- the fundamentally predatorial economic relationship between the bourgeois class and the proletariat -- rather than religion being a fundamental problem in itself. As Napoleon put it, "Religion is great stuff for keeping the poor from murdering the rich."

Karl Rove: Apologize, resign, or both

Karl Rove: Apologize, resign, or both 06/24/2005 09:59 PM
As a liberal, I'm not insulted by Karl Rove's remark that "liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers." He's just demagoging based on a seed of truth: I do want to understand our attackers (because it's stupid in n dimensions not to understand the people you're fighting) and I do want a nuanced, well-thought-out response that will actually make my children safer, rather than the kneejerk Bomb Someone strategery we got from Bush and Rove. So, fine, politicians exaggerate the positions they don't like and even...

Before Bush launched his war on Iraq, I argued about the folly of a predominantly Christian nation trying to impose a Richard "Prince of Darkness" Perle-Ahmed Chalabi type of democracy on Iraq with bayonets and bombs. I also argued that the logic of American troops in Iraq, at best estranged fron Iraqis by barriers of religion, culture and language, would soon cause American troops to be seen as occupiers, and would cause American troops to act as occupying armies always act in a strange land. My experience of living in an Arab country for two years convinced me that the United States was headed for disaster. But I confess, I never imagined this: Some outraged member of the military has leaked some more photos of Iraqis being abused and tortured by American soldiers to the Washington Post, and the Washington Post is leading, on their website at least, with this (cropped) photo of a naked Iraqi man on a dog leash being held by a female American soldier. These pictures show at least a minimal amount of knowledge of Arab culture, because if one was seeking to humiliate an Arab man, presumably a citizen of the country we claim we are liberating, it would be hard to do more. Each and every item visible in this picture would contribute to that humiliation. Buried in a stupid NYT story about a stupid inside-the-Beltway-only Washington game about Bush pretending to spank Rumsfeld for having been caught abusing Arabs was a second-hand quote by Bush's brain, Karl Rove, who: told one Bush adviser that he believes that it will take a generation for the United States to live this scandal down in the Arab world Well, I finally agree with Karl Rove about something. It will take decades, if not a century, to undo the damage in the Arab world that Bush has done in 3 years. And Americans will pay a heavy price in the meantime. Tell me again how Bush's war on Iraq has helped the so-called "War on Terrorism?" At this point, we will be lucky if the leaders of all the Arab countries, including all our former allies, don't publically encourage their young men to take revenge on America for these abominations. Bush's war on Iraq has been a disaster, on a practical as well as moral front. As I said earlier this week, we are continuing to aid...

Bill Gates' employees were way ahead of the boss when it came to blogging, but it's good to see Gates' endorsement (BBC) nonetheless. If he gets it -- and he obviously does -- then a lot of other folks are sure to follow. I wonder how soon blogging will become a natural, integral part of the operating system. RSS would be a good start.

While much of the blogging world has been ga-ga over getting into the Democratic National Convention, it's tough to find anything interesting going on among the convention bloggers (to their credit, go turn on CSPAN today and see for yourself how boring it is). While our own Jessamyn is there (here are profiles of everyone going), I've found the strange CNN/Technorati partnership to be the most useful thing. Technorati founder David Sifry is basically doing a metafilter of all convention blogs over on CNN as the daily blog roundup, highlighting the posts worth reading among the participants.

The Register hit by XSS

The Register hit by XSS 12/17/2004 06:33 PM

Here's a nasty one: popular tech news site The Register was hit on Saturday by the Bofra exploit, a nasty worm which uses an iframe vulnerability in (you guessed it) Internet Explorer to install nasty things on the victim's PC. Where it gets interesting is that the attack wasn't against the Register themselves; it came through their third party ad serving company, Falk AG.

This is a classic example of a cross site scripting attack, in which malicious client-side code (usually JavaScript) is uwittingly served up by an otherwise innocent site. Usually, cross site scripting is caused by a badly written server-side application failing to properly escape data sent in a query string before displaying it on a page. This allows attackers to create links which, when followed, steal cookies or cause other nasty effects for the user following the link. Attacks on third parties with scripts served up on a target website's pages (ad serving companies are a classic example) are less common but much more damaging as the malicious code involved will be distributed to everyone who visits that site, whether they click on a hostile link or not.

This problem isn't restricted to ad servers; any service where web pages point to a JavaScript file hosted on an external site are potentially at risk should the external site be compromised by crackers or abused by its legitimate owner.

An aside: users of alternative browsers (Get Firefox!), as well as those who had upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2, were unaffected.
