A first look at JavaServer Faces, Part 1
01/06/2003 11:38 PMJavaServer Faces (JSF) is an application framework for creating
Web-based user interfaces. If you are familiar with Struts (a popular
open source JSP-based Web application framework) and Swing (the
standard Java user interface framework for desktop applications),
think of JavaServer Faces as a combination of those two frameworks.
Like Struts, JSF provides Web application lifecycle management through
a controller servlet; and like Swing, JSF provides a rich component
model complete with event handling and component rendering. -- David
Geary
"btn" Also read this discussion on JSF with the authors of the spec.
This looks very interesting. I like it a lot because it appears more
natural than MVC. Some of the ideas on designing user interfaces are
very similar to what we have done in our commercial software, phpLens.
I also suspect that a careful blending of the best features of
JavaServer Faces and MVC could result in a more flexible application
framework. Anyone in the PHP world want to take up the challenge? But
first we have to find a better name than JavaServer Faces...

MPAA Faces Legal Action Over False
Takedown Notices
09/20/2004 01:24 PMJust a few weeks ago we pointed to yet another example of the MPAA
sending
out bogus takedown letters to people who control servers hosting
files that have names that sound like certain movie titles, but
clearly have nothing to do with the movie. As we noted then, this
shows just one of the many problems with the way the system works.
Right now, the entertainment industry can accuse anyone of violating
copyright law for distributing a file that the industry has no control
over and whoever hosts the file is required by law to take it down.
The industry should be required to at least verify that the file is
infringing. The same thing has apparently happened in Australia to
Linux Australia, but the folks there have realized
the false accusation breaks a few laws in Australia, and
they've contacted their lawyers to respond to the MPAA's takedown
notice. In this case, they were accused of distributing the movies
"Grind" and "Twisted" when they were really distributing the
Twisted
framework and the memory management problem solving tool
Valgrind. It's
unlikely much will come of this, as the MPAA will apologize... and
then keep on sending out bogus takedown notices causing problems for
all sorts of perfectly legitimate individuals and companies.

It is impossible
to look at these images and not think about the persons depicted
there. But, save for one fact that is a given—and what we find in or
infer from these images—we know nothing about those persons, and never
will. The given is that they are all prisoners: for whatever reason,
they have been deprived of liberty, the single piece of enduring proof
of which is the image at which we presently gaze. The conclusions we
draw, the feelings we have, the narratives we suppose—they are all our
own. The images are mirrors, resonating with aspects of our selves we
perhaps never before encountered.

08/03/2004 02:58 PMThe grid of images UI is one of teh most effective ways of
communicating LOTS of stuff - all at the same time. Videowall
mentality permeates through this grid - and can be used effectively
for a PeoplePlace, a set of Top Albums you're
listening to or practially any sort of high-load scalability
challenge one might have.
I usually don't pontificate about UI theory - but this screams out
to be talked about. I used to blog allot a couple of years ago about
Faces. Well now I'm gonna start blogging allot about FaceWalls.
Everyone should use these image grids - for new kinds of
micro-content!
It's a wonderful, scalable interface metaphor.

last.FM uses the image
grid effectively to let folks know what albums you're listening to.
This coolio scalable interface approach works subliminally -
regardless of what language you speak or what cult you adhere to.
Eventually we'll have loads of open source templates to let folks
roll over a thumbnail image and have it zoom up to reveal details of
what that information is - and as fast as you can move your mouse,
you're onto the next thumbnail image.
This is what I mean by "letting Apple do our R&D for us."
We all have seen the Mac OS X icon dock zoom up and down - now we
ALL can use that lick for our 'FaceWall' browsing.

to get in lots more practice in the coming months, so the quality
should hopefully improve.

Gallery of shaken faces
Gallery of shaken faces
04/07/2005 12:49 PMDavid Pescovitz:
This gallery of "shaken face" photos is very strange and funny. From
the FAQ:
2. How do I make
one?
Start by loosen up your muscles. Then we recommend using one of two
techniques: Prrr or Shaken.
- To Prrr you hold your lips together and say 'prrrr', just like a
horse on a sweet summer day.
- To Shakit you just shake your face from side to side and let those
cheeks fly free.
Sometimes you drool, but thats perfectly normal...
4. Does it hurt?
After a couple of hard shakes you can indeed feel a bit dizzy or
drowsy. If so, just wait for a minute, then start again.

Londoners are being urged to stick their chewing gum on celebrity

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows
The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows
12/22/2004 01:13 AMMicrosoft Windows have a philosophy, it seems, to offer one
thousand and one UI choices to do any single thing. This may not be
the best UI implementation, but, hey, it's interesting that Apple's
iTunes is taking this philosphy to heart.
On the Mac, you can
show iTunes as a full-fledge window, as a mini-window, or hide the
iTunes window.
On Windows, here's what you can do...
1)
Display as a full-fledge window, just like the Macintosh
version.
2) Display as a mini-window, just like the Macintosh
version.
3) Minimize the window, so that it appears as a button
on your task bar.
4) Also show the iTunes icon on the system
tray, so that you can right-click on it to access common iTunes menu
items. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose
"Advanced", and select "Show iTunes icon in system tray." Now,
minimize the iTunes windows.)
5) Show the iTunes icon on the
system tray, but don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. (To
enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and
select both "Show iTunes icon in the system tray" and "Minimize iTunes
window to system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)
6)
Don't show the iTunes icon on the system tray and don't show the
iTunes button on the task bar. Instead, show a mini-mini player on the
task bar itself. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog,
choose "Advanced", and unselect "Show iTunes icon in the system tray."
Right click on an empty area of your task bar, select the "Toolbars"
sub-menu, and then select the "iTunes" menu item. Now, minimize the
iTunes window.)
