Apple's Advantage

Apple's Advantage 03/17/2005 03:08 AM

The Mac mini's price may have spurred interest in a Mac, but what really made the Mac a contender was a change in how it is viewed: not as a PC, for working with word processors and databases, but as an appliance for managing all the digital photos and music. By Jason Snell, Macworld

Apple's Ads are too misleading

Apple's Ads are too misleading 06/11/2004 01:07 PM
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in Britain has several objections to Apple’s new G5 ads. There were three objections, the machine was “the world’s fastest personal computer”, that it was “the first with a 64-bit processor”, and that “the systems built around the G5 can shatter the 4-gigabyte memory ceiling that limits every other PC on earth”. The last two were rejected, but the first was not after an independent test comparing it to the Dell Dimension 8300 and the Dell Precision 650.

Apple's miniPod -- too little for too
much
01/07/2004 06:08 PM
Alex Salkever of Business Week humorously sums up what many people think about the new miniPod: "Far less capacity in a slightly smaller device for nearly the same cost? Sorry, Steve, this tune is off key."
SMALLER BUT WIMPIER.  Less music in a device marginally smaller at about the same price. Get it? I didn't, and few others will, either. In fact, while I was watching Jobs give his spiel, my mind replayed the infamous scene from the cult classic mockumentary Spinal Tap where the dim rock band tries to explain that dials on their amplifiers go to 11 -- and that's what makes them louder. I was left with the same sense of befuddlement after watching Jobs show off the smaller but much wimpier miniPod.

Apple's DLA strategy

Apple's DLA strategy 07/26/2004 11:07 PM

Apple just announced a new iTunes mobile version that Motorola will load onto their "mass-market music phones" in the first half of next year. TheFeature's Carlo Longino gives his quick take on the deal:

Plenty of handsets today are capable of playing mp3s, but presumably none do it with the ease and grace -- or inherent coolness -- of Apple's products. It's an interesting move for Apple, which has said in the past the iTunes music store is a loss leader designed to help sell iPods. Presumably, they want to take new Moto phone users and turn them into iPod buyers... That, or this is just the first step towards the much-clamored-for wireless iPod.

Marc's bit.....

See! I told you so!

You think Apple still thinks of themselves as a computer company? I doubt it. They've been milking the Mac and their users for years and they're about to launch their entirely new model - which will be based upon enabling people's digital lifestyles.

Music is just the first step. And creativity.

You'll soon see .Mac and Rendevouz play a big part in Apple's comprehensive solution for the digital convergence. Shared calendars for the family, tied into your vacation albums and home movies. Throw in nutrional guides, pick-up and drop-off schedules and after-school activities - and we'll finally have iCommunity.

Apple is showing the world - right now - that end-user's experiences actually DO count.

That's why the Mac was always the best and why the iPod is the best. They're doing our R&D for us!

Apple's AAC DRM defeated

Apple's AAC DRM defeated 11/14/2003 10:17 AM
Software, called MyTunes, lets users of iTunes for Windows share songs purchased through the iTunes Music Store. One of the features of iTunes 4, released in May, allowed users to stream music from their playlists to other users, but the feature was removed in iTunes version 4.0.1 when software was created that allowed the stream to be saved, effectively allowing users to illegally share music. MyTunes works in a different manner, apparantly overriding the Digital Rights Management built in...

While Panther sets a new standard for ease of use and interface look and feel, it still lacks features that Linux users have long enjoyed.

Apple is still exhibiting at OracleWorld in San Francisco, despite a bomb-threat last night.
