Auctioning off unused airport wifi
access
12/17/2004 06:31 PM

I just paid $6.95 for a day of wifi access here in the Newark Airport. Nobody except Tom Hanks uses a full day of airport wifi access, do they? I wish I could sell off my unused hours. Someone want to set up a little airport market for buying and selling unusued capacity?...

Is Verizon Limiting WiFi Access To Only
Registered Computers?

Is Verizon Limiting WiFi Access To Only
Registered Computers?
08/12/2004 01:28 PM
While companies like Speakeasy continue to win customers by telling people they can do whatever they want with the broadband connection into the home, it looks like Verizon may be going in the other direction. An article in the NY Times suggests that Verizon is rolling out a new system that limits WiFi to only "registered" computers. Unfortunately, the article isn't clear at all, and the issue gets confused because the writer, who was blocked, knows she was using a neighbor's WiFi who was actually connected via SBC. The way the article is written, it sounds like she thought Verizon was somehow getting in the way and blocking her SBC borrowing, when it's pretty obvious that she just picked up the signal from someone else's Verizon-connected WiFi. The more interesting question, though, is whether or not Verizon really is requiring users to "register" every computer they want to log on to an account. If they are, it's a ridiculous and backwards thinking policy. While there's nothing wrong with keeping those you don't want off your WiFi, shouldn't it be up to the person paying for the connection? All Verizon has done is made it much more difficult for its own customers to use WiFi in a useful way. There are plenty of situations where there are perfectly good reasons to open up your WiFi to a "non-registered" computer (someone is visiting and wants to use their computer, you buy another computer, you bring home a work laptop, etc.), and Verizon has just made that much more difficult. Also, why should Verizon need to know how many computers I have accessing the connection? They're just selling the connection. All the more reason to go with a more customer friendly broadband ISP.

Have you ever wondered about all the
unused keys on your keyboard?
06/13/2004 01:04 AM
Ole Eichhorn: Have you ever wondered about all the unused keys on your keyboard? Us Mac users have it slightly better, since we actually use the Command and Option keys, and Apple omits some of the useless keys like Scroll Lock. I agree that Caps Lock is useless; let's just put the Control key there (no, I am not a former Sun user; stop looking at me like that). And as a programmer/HTML coder, I'd like to see +, <, and > promoted to their own keys. The [ and ] keys should probably be swapped so that { and } are the default and [ and ] are the shifted characters. No doubt dedicated ( and ) keys would be worth it to Lisp programmers.

A woman who apparently has left a long line of scams and crimes (including driving over her mother) in her wake, and who is wanted in many places, is apparently trying to auction off a dinner date on eBay at a "mystery location", where she claims she'd tell the stories of her various scams and crimes. eBay has taken the auction down, but not because of the nature of the auction, but because the woman also was trying to sell her own book separately within the same auction - and eBay frowns on you trying to offer two separate deals in a single auction. Of course, police say most of the "stories" you might hear from this woman are made up. You also have to wonder if the woman would ever actually show up. Among her many, many scams, she's been accused of selling stuff on eBay and not delivering the goods.

Diskology's DiskJockey is a hardware-based hard disk copy and diagnostic tool that enables users to copy or clone the contents of one hard drive mechanism onto another device. Additional space left over on the new device might go to waste because of the smaller partition size, however. Utility developer SubRosaSoft.com Ltd. has addressed that problem with DiskJockeyExpander, a new US$25 software utility that can recover the unused space. It's a subset of VolumeWorks, a utility that provides similar functionality for a wider range of hard drive devices.

The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID "FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey
