Well, that certainly was quick. Yesterday we wrote about the tempo rary restraining order against SpamCop from reporting any spam from OptInRealBig to ISPs other than OptIn's own, and today that temporary restraining order was dissolved, as it appears the lawyers for IronPort/SpamCop made a compelling argument that OptInRealBig wasn't telling the full story. The judge admits that: "The legal issues are more complicated than they originally appeared." The hearing on the case has also been moved up a few days and will be held early next week.

Email: to sign or not to sign? 01/22/2004 02:10 AM
If you participate in non-techno-geek mailing lists, and you also make a habit of "signing" your mail in compliance with the open standards articulated by RFC2015/3156, you've undoubtedly run into questions about what you're doing and possibly even criticism for doing it. At least that's been my experience over the past couple of years on mailing lists as low-tech as one dedicated to raising donkeys and mules and as high-tech as tech journalism. Well, on second thought, maybe those are both low-tech. But in any case, I've been asked to stop signing messages on both lists. The question is what to do: continue swimming upstream or give in and go with the flow?

Computing Supply and Demand

Computing Supply and Demand 10/28/2003 11:07 PM

I was impressed with this interview with Greg Papadopoulos, Sun Microsystem's new CTO.  First comment that caught my attention was when he said, "I think the biggest piece of crap going around right now is that this is a mature industry and innovation doesn't matter."  He goes on at length about how improvements in computing efficiency impact the cost equation: "You have this exponential improvement in computing, but ERP is not getting exponentially complex. So you would certainly expect it to get cheaper. If you went to a CFO and said, "I can give you a million times more computing power," they would say, "OK, I'm not going to close my books every millisecond, so you are going to give it to me at a millionth of the cost." But if you go to an R&D department or to Wall Street, they will say, "Please, bring it on." I think we can actually free-up dollars from other parts of the business. They would definitely see a competitive return doing better simulation of product development, for instance."

That's exactly how I see it, too.  People are crazy if they think software is played out.  He also has some interesting things to say about "utility computing", web services, and outsourcing.

Supply Chain Management for the Home?

Supply Chain Management for the Home? 12/03/2003 02:42 PM
Researchers at ABI say that functions such as supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, and customer relationship management were designed for the enterprise but make sense in the home: Now that more homes have broadband access and networks, those functions can be useful to people in their homes. The report discusses connecting security, entertainment, HVAC, lighting, and appliances. By 2008, ABI expects the home automation market to grow to $3.8 billion. It's a bit of a stretch to talk about CRM and supply chain management in the home, but it makes a clever analogy. Some home automation functions should prove useful, while others will likely be fun but useless....
