Ian takes on the new Apple 30"

Ian takes on the new Apple 30" 07/03/2004 01:45 PM
Ian Griffiths goes into a thorough explanation about high-dpi monitors in his latest two entries. The first entry talks about Apple's new 30" monster monitor settling on 100dpi and how high dpi does not cause eyestrain, but OSs not supporting high-dpi is the cause. The second entry offers up an alternative monitor from ViewSonic called the VP2290b and once again he provides more information then you know about how monitors work and that he uses a 150dpi monitor with 9pt font.

Apple Takes a Bigger Bite of RSS

Safari RSS Reader

"Steve Jobs demoed Safari’s RSS Reader today. Read about it and then check it out in action.

Update: Brent Simmons, developer of NetNewsWire, reacts to Safari RSS." [The RSS Weblog]

Is this big news? Sure, but anyone that reads Scoble knows Microsoft is working towards integrating RSS into Longhorn itself.

However, I agree 100% with Steven that the best RSS aggregator is one that is web-based, not a desktop client. As more and more people shift their information on the go, the last thing they'll need is to begin relying heavily on an aggregator that they'll lose when their desktop crashes. 'Cause we've all had that happen, haven't we?

Cybersquatter takes Apple to High Court

Cybersquatter takes Apple to High Court 03/29/2005 01:47 PM
Benjamin Cohen, former owner of the iTunes.co.uk domain name, will be taking Apple to the High Court to try and overturn a ruling from a domain registry that stated the domain name should be transferred to Apple. Apple issued proceedings against Cohen in December through the UK internet registry Nominet, claiming ownership of the domain should be transferred to Apple because it holds the iTunes trademark. The company won a legal battle against Cohen earlier in March as Nominet claimed that he had made an "abusive registration" and ruled that the domain name should be transferred to Apple. Cohen will be applying to the High Court on Tuesday or Wednesday for a judicial review. "We feel that the procedure that Nominet utilise to settle disputes is unfair and biased towards big business at the expense of legitimate small British companies," Cohen told The Guardian. "It's a matter of principle now. I paid for it and if Apple had contacted me nicely without lawyers we would have sold it to them."

Apple takes Playfair bullying to India

Apple takes Playfair bullying to India 04/16/2004 11:50 AM
Playfair is the program that removes the use-restriction wrapper from your iTunes Music Store tracks. It used to be hosted on SourceForge, but they chickened out when Apple sent them a bullying note demanding takedown under the ludicrous and loathesome DMCA. Playfair moved to a host in India, which apparently has no such law, but now Apple has nastygrammed the Indian hosts too, resulting in another takedown while the Indians get some legal advice. Gee, Apple, you really can't buy publicity like this. Well, you can. But why would you want to? Link (via /.)

Microsoft takes Apple approach to
security

Microsoft takes Apple approach to
security
08/09/2004 10:00 AM
Microsoft has finally finished the long-awaited upgrade for Windows XP, which should be available to PC users in August. The second major update since XP was released in October 2001 focuses on fixing the security holes that have plagued it in recent months. Microsoft has followed Apple's lead in turning all the security features on by default, rather then leaving the OS wide-open to attacks. As well as making virus-writers' and hackers' work that much more difficult, the update could also spell the end for the pop-up ad. Internet Explorer 6 will be set to block pop-ups by default, trailing all the other major browsers that have long had built-in pop-up blocking.

WWDC: Apple Takes Potshots at Microsoft 06/28/2004 08:27 AM

You know, this is the sort of snarky attitude that people like from Apple. These shots from WWDC show a giant OSX 10.4 "Tiger" disc, with the phrases, "Introducing Longhorn," "Redmond, We have a problem," "This should keep Redmond busy," and "Redmond, start your photocopiers." Ooh, the burn!
