Fun With Accounting: How Damaging Will
Stock Option Expenses Be?

Fun With Accounting: How Damaging Will
Stock Option Expenses Be?
06/02/2004 02:41 AM
This argument has been going on for years, and it seems like both sides are exaggerating either the need for or the damage that will be done by forcing Silicon Valley companies to expense stock options. In many cases, those in favor of the plan seem to believe that stock options are inevitably linked to fraud - which isn't true at all. While stock options can be linked to fraud, just expensing them doesn't change that. Most of the information (minus the somewhat arbitrary valuation) is already public information - it's just not as clearly noted in the financial statements. Thus, folks on Wall Street (and any savvy investor) should already know the impact of stock options on companies. Really, all this does, is shift some numbers around in the books - but doesn't impact real cash at all. For the people who the shifted numbers will really impact, the alternative calculations have already been done. The one shift may be that, due to the importance of "profitability," some companies may cut back on options because it appears to hurt their bottom line (despite having no impact whatsoever on cash flow). All in all, the big debate over stock options seems like a lot of talk over a very small issue. That said, I support the idea that we keep things as is - as the plan to expense them seems unlikely to correct any of the real problems with the system and seems more likely to create an additional accounting headache.

Apple and its dual-core option

Apple and its dual-core option 08/22/2004 11:29 AM
According to an article published Wednesday in The Register, it seems that Freescale Semiconductor Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola Inc., is set to unveil a dual-core processor at Microprocessor Forum in San Jose in October. "Freescale's dual-core PowerPC is expected to sport an on-board memory controller, this one capable of supporting DDR 2 SDRAM, along with a Gigabit Ethernet controller. It is also expected to use the Rapid IO bus, according to past Motorola pronouncements, though MPX bus support is also anticipated to maintain backward compatibility… (with speeds) beyond 2GHz." Of course, this all sounds great, but with all the chatter regarding dual-processor PowerBooks, this dual-core nonsense is bound to cause some confusion. So, allow me to explain, as best I understand it, anyway. The main issue here is heat. As we know, a single processor produces a heck of a lot of warmth, and the issue of cooling has been a major bone of contention in Apple’s hardware. As it goes with the current offerings, the faster the chip, the hotter the output, making it incredibly difficult for Apple to implement either dual G4 or G5 architecture into its current line of laptops. That being said, dual-core processors represent an interesting option — or at least a stop-gap between the PowerBook-friendly G5. Dual-cores can process two times more data per clock, which ultimately allows the whole system to perform much better when running under processor-intensive applications. Furthermore, both cores have their own cache. Level 2 and level 3 cache have always been an issue with G4 processors, as their general clock and bus speed hindrances have been compensated for with a fair amount of cache. However, as with the G5, dual G4 and basically every new chip that may appear the horizon is the architecture of Freescale’s current MPX bus. Since Apple’s not likely to overhaul its flagship laptop (i.e., with RapidIO interconnect) until it is capable to sport a G5, so the dual-core may be as crippled as the DDR SDRAM that currently pumps through the PowerBook. Dual-core may not mean much to the PowerBook as it stands, but it definitely spells good things to come for the PowerPC processor — both from Motorola and (hopefully, eventually) IBM. Since keeping PowerBook's cool and kernel-panic free is of utmost importance, dual-core could very well represent the future of Apple's professional portables. I can see it now: One Apple, Two Cores.

Item! MacMinute has picked up a scan of a upcoming magazine ad detailing the "seamless integration of iPod and automobile," specifically, it seems, the BMW 3 Series, X3, and Z4. Although there's no picture of the dock, the new adapter will allow control of the iPod via controls on the steering wheel. If they integrate an iPod-like touch wheel around the BMW logo I will flip. Not that I can afford a Bimmer, mind you, but just because that would be hot. Developing!

The ads lead to the site "iPodYourBMW.com," which for now remains offline.

Apple reclaims world's leading brand crown from Google:Apple
The US-based computer giant was voted the most influential brand of 2004 in a survey of about 2,000 advertising executives, brand managers and academics, conducted by Brandchannel. The magazine's parent company, Interbrand, said that Apple Computer's re-dominance in the latest survey was driven by the iMac computer and the trend-setting iPod music players. The online search giant, Google, descended to the second position in the latest survey, after having held the top position in the past two years.

Apple upgrades laptop line:
US computer company Apple has launched a new PowerBook line, featuring PowerPC G4 processors running up to 1.67GHz. All PowerBooks come standard with 512MB memory, integrated AirPort 802.11g, Bluetooth 2.0 wireless networking and two Apple patent-pending technologies — the Scrolling TrackPad and the Sudden Motion Sensor. Every PowerBook includes iLife ’05, Apple’s suite of digital lifestyle applications. iLife ’05 includes iTunes 4.7.1, iPhoto 5, iMovie HD, iDVD 5 and GarageBand 2.
