09/20/2004 10:22 AMWhen Firefox add
ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was
excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular
browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild
about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to
choose an external RSS reader.
So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon
to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.
Michael Koziarski rose to
the challenge and created F
eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe
to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed:
// protocol. Which means that even though the extension was
designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon.
Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the
Mac.
Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR"
icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon.
Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and
clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel"
wizard to subscribe to it.
Details on Feed Your Reader are h
ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing
this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here
.

Onfolio
Onfolio
04/18/2004 09:41 PMOnfolio: An
interesting new app for organizing information you find online. It'd
be better, I think, as a Web-based app rather than a client tool.
Watch the
Flash presentation here for the quick skinny.
On another note, is $29.95 is standard Web-related application
price these days?
Onfolio is a PC application for collecting, organizing and sharing
information you find online. Fully integrated with Microsoft Internet
Explorer and Office, Onfolio has tools for capturing a wide range of
content including links, text snippets, images, web pages, and
documents. Onfolio lets you organize and find captured content quickly
and easily. And with Onfolio, you can easily share your research in
documents, presentations, emails, and research reports.
Onfolio almost reached the status of shiny object, but I just paved
and reloaded this machine, and I don't want to clutter it up with junk
(actually, if truth be told, my wife ordered me not to clutter
it up with junk).
Besides, they used the word "seamless" in the presentation, and
that's a big red flag right there. If anyone ever uses "seamless" and
"robust" together, dispatch a hit team to their corporate headquarters
immediately.

Onfolio, Micro-content, and Search
Information Management
Onfolio, Micro-content, and Search
Information Management
04/09/2004 04:08 PMToday, Onfolio Inc. launched their
namesake product Onfolio, helping to shape and define a new and
important category in Internet software -- search information
management.
Onfolio helps Internet users to easily collect, organize and share
their research. The product is built around the idea that
'search' has become the most common Internet activity, yet end-users
have had virtually no good tools to help them manage and share all the
"micro-content" that they find on the Internet.
The product tightly integrates into Internet Explorer,
Microsoft Office and the Windows desktop, enabling users to capture
fragments of content from web pages, email, RSS feeds, and their
desktop. In essence, users create content 'collections',
personal databases of micro-content that can be organized and searched
locally, but then re-composed into reports that can be shared via
email, posted as websites, and published as RSS feeds.
Forbes.com characterizes it's essential role: "Onfolio faces head-on the problem of information
overload, giving Internet users ways to capture and reuse the many
tidbits they come across in everyday Internet use."
The uses of the product touch anyone who seriously uses the Web,
whether for personal or professional use. The Onfolio website
has some great usage examples
to help spark your imagination.
Onfolio was founded by my
brother J.J. Allaire, and also led by Allaire co-founders Adam Berrey
and Charles Teague. They've done a great job creating an
exceptionally useful product that will help all of us become more
productive users of information on the Internet.
I can personally attest that Onfolio has transformed my
relationship with content on the Internet -- I am more in control of
the surging amount of micro-content that floods websites, email, RSS
feeds and beyond. Thanks guys!

Kudos to Xcode group
Kudos to Xcode group
06/17/2005 04:30 PMAnother group at Apple that impressed me at WWDC this year was the
folks behind
Xcode.
Xcode 2.0 shipped with Tiger, at the end of April. Xcode 2.1 shipped
less than two months later.
It includes support for universal binaries, of course—but
that’s not all, there are a bunch of nice user features in
there, including a bunch of debugging improvements and a welcome
change to how build settings are configured.
(I suspect the release of 2.1 is a combination of good planning, good
project management, and possibly a few late nights.)
Having this new version of Xcode makes the Intel transition
credible—without it, it would be all hand-waving and telling
developers how it
will be easy once the tools are ready. Better
to show us, as they’ve done, that it’s
already
easy.

04/06/2005 11:54 AMIf you work with a company that sells software, odds are that your
approach to marketing and public relations is the same as it’s

companies with sharp marketing teams are realizing that the industry
has changed and that visibility is more about identifying and

01/01/2005 06:44 PMFeed 0.6.4
Feed 0.6.4
04/08/2005 12:00 PMFeed is a RSS and Atom news reader, with the latest version released
in February 2005. The developer wrote this application because all of
the existing freeware RSS readers were more of a "hybrid between
iTunes and a web browser," and he wanted something that was more like
an email client.
The application is described as being "simple and familiar" including
a single window interface, and it lives up to that claim. Because
Feed is designed to work like a mail program, individual articles are
displayed directly in Feed.
The latest version of Feed now features drag and drop support,
allowing the user to drag text and URL clippings directly into the
Feed drawer from any application. Adding links from other
applications is simple, and any feed or article can be dragged from
Feed to another application that accepts Text or URL clippings. The
application also features audio notifications allowing the user to
choose any of the built in sounds to play when a new item becomes
available. Articles can be bookmarked in the feed list with a simple
command or by dragging the link to the Feed drawer, allowing articles
to be grouped for later reading or to save an article indefinitely.
The user has the option to completely customize the way feeds are
managed and displayed with the drag and drop interface. Feeds can be
grouped into folders and then display all articles in the group
together. The application currently supports all versions of Atom and
RSS allowing the importing and exporting of existing RSS feed
subscriptions in the industry-standard OPML format.

The Need for Feed(s)
The Need for Feed(s)
04/07/2005 05:02 AMFor online newspapers, news aggregators like Google News are a mixed
blessing: They can generate big traffic, but maybe they're also
stealing a bit of thunder. Some newspapers are about to fight back
with services of their own. By John Gartner.

11/25/2003 10:24 PMWow, that's what
I call feedback! It's a shame pretty much everyone hates the new
design but I like it so it stays. I've taken a few tips
though and tweaked the link colours a bit, as well as making a few
other small changes such as a darker green for the header and a 1em
margin around the page.
In an attempt to satiate the voracious appetite for RSS displayed by some of
my visitors I've set up two new feeds: Blog comments and Blogmarks. I don't
use an aggregator myself so I'd appreciate feedback on how well they
work. I've also put together a blogmarks archive - no
search engine yet, but it's on the list.

+1 for Feed URI Scheme
+1 for Feed URI Scheme
01/22/2004 02:12 AM
On the issue of whether to introduce a new URI scheme to allow
one-click feed subscription,
in spite of W3C Technical Architecture Group's position against new
URI schemes, I
am adding my vote to Dare
Obasanjo's proposal which is already in fairly wide use.
While I understand
W3C TAG's position, a less than ideal solution is better than
expecting the world
to accept the right solution.
If you are unfamiliar with this issue, Jon
Udell has a post with links and words.
Update:
I should note that neither schemes address the need to support
multiple aggregators
at the same time. I thought about writing a general feed
subscription management
plugin for IE but haven't found the time yet.
