Is Forgoing Digital for Medium Format
for You?
06/16/2004 05:15 AM
It seems as though everyone in photography is moving to digital. Consumer digital cameras will outsell film cameras this year. Even professionals are moving into digital; photojournalism is practically all digital now. I have followed the development of digital cameras quite closely since first digital SLRs (those big cameras with changeable lenses) came out. As a prosumer and someone who is critical of quality of enlargements I have been saying that I will move to digital when an affordable 8 megapixel SLR comes out. Recently Canon delivered with their EOS-1D Mark II priced at around $3000. Now would be a good time to move to digital as a serious amateur photographer. Instead, I'm moving to medium format. Should you?

06/24/2004 11:13 AM

30xzoomcam.jpg imageThey say you should never judge a man by the size of his lens -- instead judge a man by the size of his penis. But if the former were the axiom on which we relied, I would be sure to purchase one unit of the Kowa Prominar TD-1, a turgid beast of a camera with a, for some, jaw-droppingly large 30x optical zoom lens. Sure, you can pick up massive, glistening cylinders like that at almost any urban street corner, or any other reputable camera shop, but since the TD-1 is digital -- megapixels, my boy; 3.14 of the finest ever to grace an SD card -- there's something more progressively pleasing about carrying something this colossal, if cumbrous, around in your pants, or backpack.

REAL Software on Monday announced the release of REALbasic 5.5.5, an update to its development environment for Mac, PC and Linux operating systems. This release emphasizes a continuing effort REAL Software has made to reach out to Windows developers who are experienced with Microsoft's Visual Basic (VB) environment; it includes improvements to REALbasic's VB Project Converter, which helps port existing VB applications to REALbasic, where they can be cross-compiled for Mac OS X and Linux.

Adodb.stream provides a method for reading and writing files on a hard drive. This by-design functionality is sometimes used by web applications. However, when combined with known security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer, it could allow an internet web site to execute script from the Local Machine Zone (LMZ). This occurs because the ADODB.Stream object allows access to the hard drive when hosted within Internet Explorer.
