Olympus Evolt E-300 DSLR and More

Olympus Evolt E-300 DSLR and More 09/27/2004 10:49 AM

Olympus_E300front.jpg imageWhile we're on the camera tip, Olympus has announced a fistful of new cameras, including this Evolt E-300, an 8-megapixel DSLR that "is not bound by the conventions of traditional SLR film camera designs" and has a "radical new body shape...that gives the camera its unique "flat-top" appearance." I think that means Olympus just created the first plus size bull dyke camera. Go girl!

Nikon D2X, 12.4-Megapixel DSLR 09/16/2004 05:52 AM

nikon_d2x_1 imageNikon has finally announced the successor to their D1X and boy, does it look hot! Called the D2X (surprise!), the defining feature of the new DSLR is a 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor that can shoot up to five frames per second at its highest resolution, but can also be bumped down to 6.8-megapixel to increase its framerate to 8 per second. In addition, Nikon has updated their Wi-Fi transmitter for the camera; the WT-2 has both 802.11b/g support and "Capture Control," giving you the ability to control the shutter of the camera from a PC or other mobile device.

Nikon D50 Entry-Level DSLR Details
Leaked
03/30/2005 02:03 PM

nikon_d50fake.jpgNikon Germany accidentally let the product manual for the new Nikon D50 leak on the web for a bit. It's been pulled already, but not before the pertinent details of the new entry-level DSLR were extracted. Expect the the D50 to have a 6.1-megapixel sensor, a silver case, and use SD cards for storage. Now all we need is a price (expect it well under a grand).

Well, and a picture—this one is a fake.

Minolta Announces Dynax 7D/Maxxum 7
DSLR, DiMAGE A200
09/15/2004 07:46 AM

Minolta has officially announced that DSLR camera we talked about a few days ago, the Dynax 7D/Maxxum 7 (the US gets the Maxxum name because we do everything to the max). It is 6.1-megapixels, has built-in anti-shake technology (developed by Mooninites?) and will use the Dynax AF set of Minolta lenses. No price yet, though, so we'll just keep an eye on it for now and wait for some of the camera dorks to get their hands on review units.

Minolta also announced an 8-megapixel "SLR-type" DiMAGE called the A200 [the one of the right], if you want all the megapixels but not all the quality, control, or function of the 7D.

Olympus m:robe 100 in Two New Colors

Olympus m:robe 100 in Two New Colors 04/14/2005 10:03 AM

mrobe_2col.jpgOlympus is offering two new colors of their m:robe MR-100 MP3 player—sort of. The front of the device is still the Knight-Rider-like red-on-black (of which, I must say, I am a fan). The back of the current models is white, but the new models will be available with backs in light pink and light blue. It's like those videos I used to stare at when I was a kid, where the cover girl was a studious bookworm by day but a crime-fighting whore at night. I may be getting some of the plot-points confused.

No idea if we'll get these models in America. I guess it depends on how well the MR-100 is selling, which is hard to augur considering Olympus misguidedly put all their marketting muscle into the MR-500.

Olympus cameras on sale 06/17/2004 01:16 PM

I just stopped by Amazon to check on some Web services stuff and noticed that they have all their Olympus cameras on sale, including the all-weather 3.2MP one I almost bought instead of my Sony camera. The Sony was my second choice, but I was impatient and Best Buy was out of the Olympus. I’m happy with the Sony and glad I bought it, but the Olympus has a lot of great features too.

Olympus Stylus 410 Review 05/31/2004 06:59 AM

olympus_410_digital_1.jpg imageMark Goldstein is collecting himself a nice set of reviews over at PhotographyBlog, and his review of the Olympus 410 Digital camera stays true to form. The 4-megapixel camera that tops Olympus's "Stylish" category has a 3x optical zoom, uses xD Picture Card format, and looks not unlike the sort of camera I would expect to see some sci-fi alien family use on vacation. Not Klingon, exactly; perhaps the Protoss.

Mark also informs me that the European name of this camera is the µ[mju:], which best I can work out is pronounced, "microbracketmuujuuucolonbracket." Fancy!

Olympus R1000 Ruggish PDA

Olympus R1000 Ruggish PDA 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

olympus_rug.jpg imageBuilt to withstand the hottest lava flows (or at least being placed in a Humvee's tire tracks for a press photo), Olympus has announced the world's first "Tough Digital Assistant". Configurable in both milquetoast Win CE.Net 4.2 or the hairy, bearded Linux option, it can also include both Bluetooth and 802.11b, if you chose, ruggedly transmitting radio waves capable of traversing the rockiest electromagnetic spectrum.  They claim it can withstand a four-foot drop onto concrete, but strangely can't withstand concrete dropped from four feet above it (probably; they won't let us try).

It's nice looking, though, especially in a category otherwise filled with knobby plastic chassis (with horrible gas mileage).

Olympus Camedia AZ-1 Announced

Olympus Camedia AZ-1 Announced 04/20/2004 08:45 AM
Olympus has announced the 3.2-megapixel Camedia AZ-1 compact digital, using a 3x 'folded optics' lens design as seen in similar small profile cameras from Minolta and Sony. Olympus Mju (µ) -mini DIGITAL

Olympus Mju (µ) -mini DIGITAL 09/03/2004 08:44 AM

blue_front_closed_400.jpg imageOlympus has a new consumer camera out today with a style many will probably hate, but I think is rather attractive, in a mecha-node robot spoor sort of way. It's called the MJU MINI Digital, and it's a 4-megapixel camera with a 1.8-inch screen, a metal body, unlimited movie recording. Plus it comes in six new colors, all of which will be found in the most stylish of pockets when it is released later this year in the UK for £250.

Multiple snaps in an elliptical orbit to Olympus for taking a chance on this model. I expect this one will be very popular.

Olympus offers new 3.2MP digital camera 09/16/2004 09:38 AM
Olympus on Thursday rolled out the D-535 Zoom Digital Camera, a new 3.2-megapixel point and shoot model that features a "one touch" design the company claims is easier to use for entry-level users: It sports separate buttons for shooting, playing back and erasing digital images. The camera also features a 1.5-inch LCD display, 3x optical zoom lens, the ability to record QuickTime movies, and six preset still image shooting modes. The D-535 Zoom has 12MB of on-board internal memory and stores additional images on xD-Picture Cards. The camera is PictBridge-compatible, to output directly to supported printers, and features a USB interface to connect to Macs or PCs. It measures 3.4 x 2.5 x 1.5 inches and weighs 4.9 ounces. Available this October, the D-535 Zoom will cost US$149.99.
