Griffin Technology Inc. on Monday unveiled the iBeam, a new flashlight and laser pointer combination designed to work as a snap-on package for iPods and iPod minis. The flashlight and laser pointer are two separate devices that feature protective caps and can be clipped on to a keychain when not in use. The devices plug in to the iPod's headphone jack. The package will cost US$19.99 when it ships by the end of October.

Behold the Griffin iBeam! Grabbing power from your iPod or iPod mini turns this key fob into either a class IIIA laser pointer or a flashlight. Of course, by plugging this into the dock-connector, you have temporarily disabled the audio playing abilities that you payed upwards of $250 to acquire in order to enjoy the luminance of an add-on device that, until now, could only be found in much cheaper packages. But hey, if you like bright lights better than loud music, this is the gadget for you.

green-laser-pointer2.jpg imageI'm not positive, but I'm fairly sure that the team at GadgetMadness violated at least two or three chapters of the PATRIOT ACT in the process of reviewing the Green Laser Pointer II from ThinkGeek. I mean, isn't it illegal to use lasers to point at things outside? Isn't it illegal to use lasers for fun? John Ashcroft would roll over in his oil-anointed grave if he knew someone had illuminated a water tower with a green laser from a distance of 1.24 miles away, then provided a video of their terrorist act. Whatever you do, please do not read this review, purchase a Green Laser Pointer II from ThinkGeek yourself, then beat and film their distance record. We have to give up some laser liberty to protect our laser freedoms, people.

imageGriffin Technologies has quietly put up the iBeam on their website (without the usual accompanying press release) of a pair of plug-in accessories that add a flashlight and a laser pointer to your iPod or iPod mini. The $20 pair of plugs (you can only use one at a time) come with caps for easy attachment to your keychain. I've no idea how good they are compared to their respective competitors, but I'm all about plugging things into the iPod - that's half the reason they're so great in the first place (and why its so hard for other companies to play catch up).

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries 09/15/2004 01:39 PM
Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that make a lot of sense. As people in Florida have been stocking up on batteries for their flashlights, it reminds you how you always need to make sure you have the right batteries around for your flashlights. They all seem to take different size batteries, and people always end up with random spare D or C batteries they don't know what to do with. One company is trying to solve that problem by creating a flashlight that will work with AA, C and D cell batteries with the flick of a switch. They claim the flashlight will show just as much light with any of the options, but the weaker batteries won't last as long.

energizer_quickswitch.jpg imageThe Energizer Quick Switch flashlight's main gimmick is the sort of obvious stroke of brilliance that apparently takes 100 years to develop. It's a regular flashlight that can take AA, C, or D cells - whatever you've got handy. Obviously, your run time will vary, but the brightness of the flashlight will remain the same no matter what. Energizer has already shipped two truckloads of the flashlights to Florida, although they noted they "weren't planning on launching this in the middle of the hurricane." (Thanks, Cletus!)

Blue-light-emitting dental flashlight
better than mouthwash
04/05/2005 06:35 AM
Cory Doctorow: Dental-care researchers are proposing a blue-light-emitting "mini-lightsaber" that you shine on your gums to kill bad bacterial more effectively than mouthwash.
"Micro-organisms called black-pigmented bacteria (BPB) such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia have been implicated in the initiation and progression of gum disease," says Soukos. Blue light kills these bacteria because it is absorbed by specific chemical compounds within the bacteria - called iron-porphyrins - causing a cascade of reactions fatal to the organism...

Bacteria in the pure culture were killed in seconds, whereas bacteria in the plaque samples were killed selectively. Those containing iron-porphyrins were most affected - a beneficial result as it is iron-porphyrins that help bacteria in harming the gums. It is the acidic environment produced by the harmful bugs that results in tooth decay.

Bigha Jasper Laser Review

Bigha Jasper Laser Review 09/02/2004 09:48 AM

bigha_laser.jpg imageI need to tell you a secret. I know fuckall about lasers.

I know that for someone as intrinsically tied to the future as I am it must be a disappointment to learn this, but it's true. I understand that they shoot photons out in such a way that they lase and are shiny and can occasionally and inexplicably be made into swords, but beyond that I'm pretty much just happy they are around, because I hear they're pretty useful.

So when Bigha offered to send me a Jasper Laser for review, I sort of mumbled yes and forgot about it, thinking at the time I'd stupidly accepted yet another boring gadget that I would be beholden to review despite having absolutely nothing to say about it. And that was true, actually, until I got drunk.

Herein lies their fatal flaw, and Gadget Shop has set out to fix this error with their Shocking Guns—a laser tag set that shocks the user when shot by an opponent. It offers two degrees of shock power and "may interfere with electrical devices such as pacemakers," if that weren't already obvious. Each $45 kit comes with two guns and two breastplates, as well as the six AAA batteries required for them.

DIY CO2 Laser CNC Table

DIY CO2 Laser CNC Table 03/19/2005 02:54 AM
Owen White bought a Coherent G100 100 Watt CO2 laser on eBay and decided to create his own CNC table. He chronicled his construction project in his blog. He is now using his DIY CNC table to cut all sorts of things. Owen writes, "Your readers might be interested in the documentation on the computer controlled circuitry to run the CNC table and laser. For circuit prototyping I used some conventional off-the-shelf electronics packages to design the circuits, then mapped the net diagrams from the circuit software to locations on a wire-wrap board using some perl code. This simplified the process of staring at a circuit and deciding where wire-wrap connections should be made. Prototype PCBs were also made. I used AVR microcontrollers for a couple functions."
