Review: iLife ’04

Review: iLife ’04 01/16/2004 11:02 AM
Assessing iLife ’04, David Pogue writes in the New York Times, “Each program in the updated suite (except iTunes) offers about a dozen enhancements. For example, the new iMovie offers video trimming with an ‘undo’ feature right in the storyboard strip. The iDVD program introduces 20 new professional-looking templates for your DVD menu screens, and can now fit two hours of amazing-looking video onto a disc. For iPhoto 4, the chief improvement is speed, enough to handle 25,000 photos per collection without bogging down. But iLife ’04 (for the Mac OS X operating system) also includes a new program called GarageBand. It’s designed to let people with even the feeblest musical talent, or even musical interest, create professional-sounding digital recordings.” [Jan 15]

Toshiba Gigabeat Available At Audiocubes

Toshiba Gigabeat Available At Audiocubes 12/22/2004 01:36 AM

gigabeat_f60_small.jpg imageYou can't get them at your local retailer, but Toshiba's 10, 20, and 60GB Gigabeat audio players are available through exporter AudioCubes. There are several words one might use to describe the Gigabeat series, amongst them: "QVGA screen," "reasonable battery life," and, "oppressively expensive." The 'economy model' F10 starts at a budget-busting $400, while the 60GB heavyweight tips breaks the scale at $730. They look like potentially pretty cool units, but you'll get more bang for your buck just about anywhere else.

09/27/2004 06:36 AM

60gb_gigabeat.jpg imageToshiba has announced new models in its Gigabeat series of hard disk-based MP3 players, including the new F models that come in sizes up to 60GB with a 2.2-inch color LCD screen. These players use 1.8-inch hard drives, as well, so we are definitely talking iPod-sized devices. It's a shame that Toshiba doesn't really promote the Gigabeat here, as I'd expect they'd sell like hotcakes, or perhaps sell like 60GB hard disk-players with huge color screens.

Battery life is projected at 11 hours, and Toshiba also offers an optional wireless link that lets you connect to a Gigabeat in its cradle over Wi-Fi from multiple computers.
