Why Wal-Mart will rule the world

Why Wal-Mart will rule the world

Why Wal-Mart will rule the world 11/14/2003 04:08 PM

Fascinating Fast Company article explains why manufacturers must suck up to Wal-Mart's demands, or face extinction.

For many suppliers, though, the only thing worse than doing business with Wal-Mart may be not doing business with Wal-Mart. Last year, 7.5 cents of every dollar spent in any store in the United States (other than auto-parts stores) went to the retailer. That means a contract with Wal-Mart can be critical even for the largest consumer-goods companies. Dial Corp., for example, does 28% of its business with Wal-Mart. If Dial lost that one account, it would have to double its sales to its next nine customers just to stay even."

Watch some amazing animations of the rise and fall of the Mughals in India. (or other examples). Only one official empire remains today, but speculation on new candidates abound.

the wal-mart way

the wal-mart way 01/07/2004 04:31 PM

An inside look from Fast Company at Wal Mart and how it achieves its low-low prices. Interesting, considering the implications it has for the US economy and (both consequently and directly) for the world economy as a whole.

The Wal-Mart you don't know

The Wal-Mart you don't know 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
Morten Halfdan posted about Walmart having pushed the cost savings too far. Fast Company had a very interesting article about that a few months ago: The Wal-Mart You Don't Know. The giant retailer's low prices often come with a high cost. Wal-Mart's relentless pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas. Are we shopping our way straight to the unemployment line?...

New Wal-Mart Display

New Wal-Mart Display 09/12/2004 02:09 PM
From Rebelscum reader JediJones: Hi, the Wal-Mart in Hazleton, PA got the OTC Falcon and VOTC display today but they put all the stuff out to the shelves instead of using the display. They put out 20 Falcons, 18 VOTC Luke, 12 VOTC Han, 12 VOTC Obi-Wan, and 6 VOTC Leia. I had heard different reports on the figure ratio so I wanted to confirm it as this. This apparently includes 6 VOTC cases of a 3-2-2-1 Luke-Han-Obi-Leia ratio. I've seen this myself at a Wal-Mart near me as well. And a buddy of mine was lucky enough to score one of the the side panels from the old display! Also, the entry/exit security machines have a new cardboard cover showing Star Wars on one side, and Mean Girls on the other. The promotional onslaught has begun!

walmartnotebook.jpg imageAs a back-to-school special, this $600 ECS-branded notebook from Wal-Mart isn't half bad - 14-inch screen, Athlon XP-M 1600+, Wi-Fi (b), and DVD-ROM. Add a little extra memory to boost up the 128MB stock setup and you've got yourself a pretty decent little machine for browsing porn and downloading term papers. Plus it comes with a legal copy of XP Home, so you'll only have to go to jail for five years when you blow that away and install XP Pro (don't quote me on the legal specifics).
