Guest Blogging on PaidContent.org 09/13/2004 09:45 PM
I'm pleased to be a guest blogger / interview on Rafat Ali's PaidContent.org, among my favorite spots on the Web for my daily dose of digital media.  Rafat has launched the ContentNext series of guest blogs on his site.  I'll be writing on a variety of topics including Internet video, the role of Flash on mobile, TiVo/NetFlix deal, and several other topics during this week.  I'll also cross-link to each of my main posts.

I'm doing a little guest blogging at Tom Peters' blog. For example, I just posted something about Netflix's way of deciding who gets which titles when... As I've said before, I'm a big admirer of Tom, so I'm thrilled to get to blog there for a bit. [Technorati tag: TomPeters]...

I've been guest blogging at GlennReynolds.com, while failing to meet my obligations here (and to my inbox -- which after a week off from teaching, I was able to clear (except for 200 replies to comments on my writing I need to respond to). How DO You Serve Two Masters?: Dean Peters over at Heal Your Church Web Site is on vacation. so he asked a bunch of us to guest-write for this week. My day was today. I hope I didn't suck.

[...] church Web sites have an interesting challenge in front of them: they have to search two audiences equally well.

First, we have the Visitors. [...] These folks are perhaps looking for a church home, and have come to your site as part of their search.

On the other side, we have the Members. These are people who already belong to the church and are active in various activities and groups.

It's actually very interesting working with someone else's MT installation. For instance, since I couldn't see the templates, I didn't know what field Dean was using for the front page — Entry Body or Extended Entry. So I guessed...and got it wrong. Additionally, I didn't know that he links Bible references automatically (awesomely done, incidentally — gotta be a heck of a regex...), so I had to pull an HREF that I originally had in there.

It's tougher that you think to come up-to-speed on someone else's site, given all the different configuration options, template tags, and plugin quirks Movable Type makes possible.

Bill Gates' employees were way ahead of the boss when it came to blogging, but it's good to see Gates' endorsement (BBC) nonetheless. If he gets it -- and he obviously does -- then a lot of other folks are sure to follow. I wonder how soon blogging will become a natural, integral part of the operating system. RSS would be a good start.

New Names & Guest Bloggers

New Names & Guest Bloggers 05/04/2004 04:38 PM

You may have noticed some new names on our blog of late. Roland Honekamp, an Internet entrepreneur in Germany, recently joined Creative Commons as Christiane Asschenfeldt's right-hand-man at iCommons HQ in Berlin. Heather Ford, a Reuters Digital Vision Fellow here at Stanford, is helping lead iCommons Africa's development, with a focus on South Africa, her home. Victor Stone, who submitted tracks to our Remix contest last year, has joined as an occasional guest blogger on matters of music and bricolage. And last but certainly not least, Creative Commons poster boy Cory Doctorow -- blogger, EFF activist, and award-winning science fiction author -- is now Creative Commons' advisor on iCommons UK. (Cory liked us so much -- and we, him -- that he joined the company.)

Stay tuned for more guest-blogging. In the meantime, welcome our new friends.

Guest Editors during my recovery

Guest Editors during my recovery 06/14/2004 02:45 PM

I am looking for a couple of guest editors to help out for the next several weeks as my recovery from spinal surgery proceeds. If you would like to help out drop a line at geeK at geeknewscentral.com. I am in transit back to Hawaii so it may be up to 48 hours before I respond. All existing editors we hope you can step up your contributions over the next 14 days..

I am also looking for someone who is up to speed on MT 3 to help me in working on several sections that I do not have ready for the switch over. I am willing to pay for this service.

Microsoft's Virtual PC software has some new competition from Dublin, Ireland-based Lismore Software Systems Inc. Lismore on Tuesday announced the release of Guest PC 1.0, a new PC emulation software for Mac OS X. The application emulates the inner workings of a PC-compatible computer, enabling Mac users to run software that's not compatible with their native operating system. Lismore is a veteran of the PC emulation market on the Macintosh; the company previously released Blue Label PowerEmulator, a PC emulator for Mac OS 9 and earlier operating systems that's been around since the late 1990s.
