Microsoft Corp said yesterday it had been working on improving its network security, two days after it warned that its Windows operating system could be vulnerable to attacks by hackers. The software giant will also unveil an upgraded Windows XP2 operating system by the end of this year, the head of the company's Taiwanese branch said yesterday. "We launched an initiative to advance our product security in 2002, and we are still on the way toward the goal of the program," Eunice Chiu, general manager of Microsoft Taiwan, told reporters at a press conference.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

First Trojan for handhelds now in the

First Trojan for handhelds now in the
wild
08/06/2004 07:56 AM
A malicious Trojan horse program has emerged for Pocket PCs, antivirus companies announced but they characterised the threat as relatively low.

The program, known alternately as Backdoor.Bardor.A and WinCE.Brador.a, lets an attacker gain full control of the handheld and is the first such "backdoor Trojan" program to emerge for Pocket PCs. However, such backdoor programs are not capable of propagating on their own and instead must be sent as email attachments or through similar means, making them less dangerous.

Symantec rated the bug a "one," the lowest on its five-point scale. In a statement, the company offered the standard warning not to open or execute files from unknown sources.

"Backdoor server and Trojan horse programs often use enticing file names to trick users into executing them," said Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager, Symantec Security Response. The bug appears to be limited to devices that use an ARM processor and Microsoft's Pocket PC operating systems, Symantec said.

Last month, researchers identified the first Windows CE virus, which researchers said was mostly a "proof-of-concept" bug, or one designed to demonstrate its own feasibility.
