06/05/2005 11:58 PMOrganic farming, the systematic conversion of land to certified
practices that ensure food safety and security from the farm to the
table, a comprehensive and fully traceable system, is developing
rapidly throughout the world. According to the International
Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement’s study The World of
Organic Agriculture: Statistics and Emerging Trends 2005, 36 countries
achieved organic mega-country status in 2004, meaning that over 50,000
hectares of certified organic land are currently being cultivated. In
total, over 26 million hectares of land are currently certified
worldwide, generating over $25 billion in revenue in 2003. [PRWEB Jun

09/02/2004 12:11 PMEngland (Reuters) -- An unexplained radio signal from deep space could
-- just might be -- contact from an alien civilization, New Scientist
magazine reported on Thursday. The signal, coming from a point between
the Pisces and Aries constellations, has been picked up three times by
a telescope in Puerto Rico.
There are other explanations besides extraterrestrial contact that may
explain the signal. New Scientist said the signal could be generated
by a previously unknown astronomical phenomenon or even be a
by-product from the telescope itself. But the mystery beam has excited
astronomers across the world.
"If they can see it four, five or six times it really begins to
get exciting," Jocelyn Bell Burnell of the University of Bath in
western England told the magazine.

origins gain 10,000 years. Humans made their first tentative steps
towards farming
23,000 years ago, much earlier than
previously thought. Stone Age people in Israel collected the seeds of
wild grasses some 10,000 years earlier than previously recognised,
say experts.

Vertical Farming: High-rise urban mass
agriculture
Vertical Farming: High-rise urban mass
agriculture
06/24/2005 06:34 PMCory Doctorow:
This well-developed project from Columbia University walks through the
realities, possibilities and constraints of multi-storey, urban,
high-rise farming:
What is proposed here that differs radically from what now exists is
to scale up the concept of indoor farming, in which a wide variety of
produce is harvested in quantity enough to sustain even the largest of
cities without significantly relying on resources beyond the city
limits. Cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and other large farm animals
seem to fall well outside the paradigm of urban farming. However,
raising a wide variety of fowl and pigs are well within the
capabilities of indoor farming. It has been estimated that it will
require approximately 300 square feet of intensively farmed indoor
space to produce enough food to support a single individual living in
an extraterrestrial environment (e.g., on a space station or a colony
on the moon or Mars)(35).

The
autonomous drones are back - and this time it's personal! These new
OAVs - short for Organic Aerial Vehicles, although 'organic' doesn't
mean what you think it means - come in three sizes, can travel up to
30 knots in light rain and moderate winds, and will even be able to
avoid obstacles like buildings, trees, and other drones.
And if we tell the terrorists we've got flying robot buttplugs

JVC Organic Screen Head Unit
JVC Organic Screen Head Unit

Sporting "the industry's highest color count" is JVC's
new single-DIN CD receiver, the "KD-SHX929?." This is quite a headunit
- you do of course get a 32,000+ color organic EL screen, but also the
ability to play movies and still images on it (the screen) while
driving. Furthermore, you can download images onto the unit yourself
by simply burning them to a CD-R; the implied usage, of course, is
autoeroticism. That being said, I think most people will be interested
in this unit because of its ability to playback WMA and MP3 files as
well. It's also got a "muting function" that will automatically mute
when on a hands-free phone call or when your navigation system yells
at you for missing a turn.
